Shafter FFA Field Day Competitors Attend Selma Event

Shafter High School agri culture students traveled to Selma for the fourth annual FFA field day. The Aberdeen Angus cattle judging contest was featured at Hacienda de los Reyes. Attendees included Leland Kroeker Marvin Kirschennam Tom Fletcher and Jack Janzen with Holger Hansen and Burley as chaperones. The program included swimming at the ranch pool.

Wasco Hosts Central Valley Route Group Dinner

Wasco will host Central Valley Highway Association members at a dinner meeting at West's Cottage Hotel next Tuesday night. Topics include the Central Valley route advertising program for 1947-48, a financial report, and proposed budget. A nominating committee will appoint a slate of officers.

Alexanders Host Wedding Supper for Newlyweds

Mrs. Richard Pearce and her husband, newly married in Las Vegas on March 30, were honored guests at a wedding supper hosted by Mrs. M. Alexander at her home in Bakersfield. Roses and mock orange blossoms decorated tables. a three tier cake and ice cream followed a ham dinner. The couple will reside in Bakersfield where both are employed at East Bakersfield Safeway.

Shafter High dramatics will present the humorous skit I’m In Love over Bakersfield’s KERN on Wednesday at 9 15 p m. The Business and Professional Women's Club outlines Girls Week activities with two hour hands on sessions for April 23, a luncheon, and a tea on March 23 at the high school home economics room. Funds from a rummage sale support a delegate to a Texas event in 1948 and a Belgian Orphan fund. Delphine Martin and Genevieve Cooper named as delegates to the Central District meeting.

Shafter Racing Stables Ba sends at least six top horses to Hollywood Park harness events as Red Streak and Frontiersman, who were runner ups on opening day, set to run in the California Bred stakes. Local High School Student Passes N R O T C Examinations

Gregory Ohanneson, the sole Kern County student among about 35 to complete N R O T C examinations, passed aptitude, physical, and interviews in Los Angeles. He awaits State Selective Committee recommendation before final entry and has applied to UC and Stanford for chemistry. He would receive naval training during college and possible Navy Reserve service after graduation. his father A Peter Ohanneson is a noted Shafter attorney.

Maricopa Merchants Discuss Then Plan Chamber of Commerce

Maricopa business men met last week to discuss forming a Chamber of Commerce for the oilfield community after a visit by Jake Allen national affairs representative of the National Chamber of Commerce. Allen spoke to the Maricopa Exchange Club and outlined committee work on new chambers. The club board then considered a plan to organize the chamber.

Premature Baby Girl Born to Peters Family

A two pound five ounce premature girl named to be kept in hospital incubator after birth on April 5 to Mr. and Mrs. Al Moose Peters. Mrs Peters has returned home. Thelma Lorraine weighs eight pounds five ounces at birth on April 10 for Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kirschenmann.

IND Community Flower Show Set For This Thursday

Shafter hosts its annual flower show this Thursday April 17 sponsored by the Wednesday Afternoon Club. Amateur exhibitors compete for prizes while commercial entries are excluded. Judges include Mrs. Charles Melton and Mrs. Maude Ely. Tea serves 2 to 4 pm with the Junior Women’s Club assisting.

Mrs Otto Handel is elected president of the Junior Women's Club and will be seated May 14. Week end arrests list several cases including Holland for drunken driving Olen D Rogan for drunkenness and shoplifting and Wood rown MecCastion who received 90 days in a road camp for beating a board bill. Other cases remain pending.

Kern Juniors Win Choice Class at Grand National Expo

Forty three hundred twenty three boys and girls entered 1041 fat cattle sheets and hogs at the Grand National Junior Livestock Exposition in San Francisco. The show classified by the Danish system awarded premiums to animals in the top grades, with many Future Farmers of America and 4 H Club members from Bakersfield, Buttonwillow, Shafter and nearby areas placing in beef, sheep and swine classes.

Bakersfield Junior College choir visits Shafter High

The Bakersfield Junior College a capella choir of 35 voices directed by Ronald Clark performed for Shafter High School students in the school gym on Thursday. A brief drama skit followed and counselors from BJC, led by Grace V. Bird, offered course planning help to seniors.
