Residents can donate at Memorial Hall on Tuesday March 22 from 3 to 7 pm. The Houchin Blood Bank unit may not return if participation stays low, and locals are urged to turn out in large numbers for themselves and families.
The Shafter Kiwanis Club established a Henry Wong Memorial Fund at Bank of America Shafter Branch. Assistant cashier Philip Dearing will oversee the fund as bank officer in charge. Contributions may be sent by check or mail to the bank to support education for Patrick and Wayne Wong.
Ebenezer Reformed Church in Shafter observes its Golden Anniversary on April 20 1969 with a 10 30 a m service by Rev Melvin B Nonhof guest minister and an afternoon 2 p m service by Rev Robert Stuebbe. The event honors the congregation founded in 1919 by early settlers from Lodi California and includes a noon meal in the new Fellowship Hall.
The Shafter City Council adopted a resolution declaring about 20 weed covered properties a public nuisance and ordered owners to clean up promptly. A public hearing on weed abatement is set for May 12. If not cleared, Public Works will do the work and bill owners. A second item gave first reading to an annexation ordinance for the CPO D tract without notice or election, with sewer work planned and water already available at the tract edge. The new cooperative General Potato and Onion and Shafter Vegetable Growers Association will process.
The council weighs annexation of the Hospital Tract on Tulare Avenue including the Shafter Convalescent Hospital and land owned by Al Eckmann. City Attorney Al Mortimer says owners consented, but Pitt development needs Planning Commission action. A new city salary schedule proposes a base pay, six month probation, 5 percent raise if retained, 2 percent longevity, and possible merit increases.
Dr. E David Cooke superintendent of Richland School District outlines Public Schools Week events from April 21 to 25. Open House at Primary and Intermediate schools April 24 7 to 8 30 p m. upper grade invites parents to visit classes with arranged conferences. Dinner served 6 to 7 30 p m for 50 cents students 90 cents adults. Theme The Public Schools Freedom's Foundation Stone. Visitors must report to the principal's office before classroom visits.
Shafter Community Improvement Council approves experimental tree planters at Central and James Streets using three varieties. Lions Club to plant petunias on East Lerdo divider strips. Teen Center talks with Mexican Colony and planned youth input. Local businesses praised for improvements. Next meeting May 8 with 22 members at Shafter Memorial Hall.
The last meeting in the series of parent education meetings for this year will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 17 in the Richland School District office. The topic is Advantages and Disadvantages of Team Teaching as requested by attending parents. Additional meetings are expected next spring.
Colleen Diltz daughter of Mr and Mrs Bob Diltz is reported in satisfactory condition after a train car accident on Easter Sunday. She underwent a second surgery on Tuesday April 15 at Mercy Hospital and currently receives no visitors while cards and notes are gratefully accepted.
Voters approved nearly nine million dollars in the October 1967 bond election for the Kern High School District. The program funds a new outdoor physical education facility at Shafter and work across many campuses, including new classrooms libraries labs and shop buildings. Contracts are underway for Highland High School and three new lecture centers at Foothill Burroughs and West High Schools. Some funds rebuilt buildings to meet State Field Act standards.
