California telephone workers test new dialing kit linked to Bakersfield central office. The system uses tubes lights and wires on steel frames with timers to track long distance calls. Dialing a long distance number simply adds extra spins on the dial to reach distant regions.
Easter sunrise services were canceled for the second straight year as rain plagued Shafter. More than 200 worshippers gathered at the Pentecostal church after adjourning from seven of the city’s largest churches. The rain began around 4 a.m. and ceased at 6:30 a.m.
Bruce M. Crawford Richland School District superintendent announces Public Schools Week April 21 to 25. Parents are urged to visit campuses and view student exhibits. Open house for Intermediate and upper grade school 6 to 8 30 pm April 21 with dinner 5 30 to 7 30 pm. At 7 school open house April 24.
Dr Theron McCuen superintendent of Kern County Union High School District spoke Tuesday before the Shafter Rotary club. He outlined expansion of the school system and rising enrollment, stressing need for more money to build classrooms and facilities now and in the future with Dr Harold Freedman serving as program chairman.
The Kern County Tuberculosis and Health Association held its annual meeting at Maison Jaussaud on March 24. James Moquist of Shafter was elected second vice president and will chair tuberculosis education in the Shafter area.
Don Hart Bakersfield auto mobile dealer and yachtsman will show motion pictures of a trip and sea rescue aboard the Escapade a racing boat owned by Jim Camp at the Exchange club meeting Thursday. A competing boat stalled in a race and went to aid the stricken vessel. Stan Cook will be program chairman.
Dr. A. A. Michelson founder and minister of the First Hebrew Christian Church of Los Angeles will preach at the First Church in Shafter Sunday. He will tell his life story and explain his beliefs in Judaism and Christianity. The speaker is a former judge and attorney who converted to Christianity.
Grunby and Boel tied at 324 votes each in a two-seat city council race in Grunby with 631 of 1418 voters casting ballots. Six absentee ballots remain, two spoiled. Elmer Anderson 256, Lawrence Kattenhorn 230 trailing. Johnston 532, Ware 553 elected city clerk and treasurer respectively. Mayor chosen from council members. Voting held at city hall and Union Congregational church.
Richland Chevrolet and Oldsmobile holds an open house this Saturday to mark the completion of a major remodeling. Ray Duerksen, the general manager, notes the enlarged showroom, expanded office facilities and expanded parts department meet the needs of the growing Shafter area. New Chevrolet and Oldsmobile models are on display and free coffee and donuts will be offered to attendees.
The Christian Business Mews Club will hold a Thursday noon meeting in the Veterans Memorial Hall, Shafter. Guest speaker Dr. Stanley Lindquist, Fresno Extension at Bakersfield College, will discuss Christian principals applied to leadership. All are invited.
Sunshine and mild weather boost Northern county farms. Farmers dig spring potatoes while cotton growers plan Monday planting and winter potato harvest accelerates. Reports show good quality and sizes eight to nine ounces, blight is spotty with minimal damage, and total 1958 potato acreage is projected near 51,300 with spring harvest to begin mid May.
Effie Wedge, longtime Shafter librarian of 33 years, announces retirement around her 70th birthday under county rules. She and husband Tom, former Hitchcock’s owners, plan to chase Dodgers games after moving to Bakersfield in 1923 and later Shafter in 1925.
Funeral services were held for Anna D. Unruh 80 at Armstrong Mortuary with Rev. Russell K officiating. Interment followed at Shafter Cemetery. Born in Germany April 9 1877 she had lived in Shafter 24 years and belonged to the Seventh Day Adventist church. Survived by daughters Elsie and Leona both of Shafter sons Albert II of North Dakota Walter of Tupman six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Three hundred pictures by local artists were displayed at the Tenth Kern County district one art festival at Veterans Memorial hall. Forty blue ribbon and 30 honorable mention awards were given across elementary high school and adult classes, with blue ribbon pieces advancing to the county finals.
The 18 month old Mark Olen Colvard died April 5 after swallowing roach poison. Funeral was Tuesday afternoon at First Baptist church with Rev. Melvin N. Krug officiating. Burial followed at Shafter cemetery. parents Mr. and Mrs. Jack Colvard of 319 Elm street survive with siblings and grandparents.
Farmers set Monday April 25 as the target to begin cotton planting as a dry spell and favorable skies boost confidence. With a five day forecast predicting continued mat weather, growers anticipate planting across fields to dry the soil and start the season.
