The U S Department of Agriculture Shafter experimental farm reports a new Acala 442 cotton breed, promising higher per acre yields and lint quality. Since 1922 the facility has developed Acala seeds, with California aiming for broad planting by 1949 and statewide cotton improvements.

Red Cross Drive Totals $62 at Shafter High School

The local Red Cross drive ended with Shafter raising 3100 of the 3000 quota. Chairman Ed Warren credited slow early returns but praised his committee and volunteers for surpassing the goal and maintaining Shafter’s record of generosity.

Wasco Plans Gala 40th Anniversary Celebration

Wasco moves forward with a two day 40th anniversary event on May 10 and 11 featuring a Saturday parade barbecue Future Farmers rodeo and street dance and a Sunday air show at Wasco airport with Sammy Mason and His Hollywood Hawks. The Wasco Chamber of Commerce will award a 1947 Ford and其他 prizes with Kenny Baker as promoter and Governor Warren potentially attending.

Chest Allots For Cancer Fund and Relief

Shafter Community Chest directors voted to appropriate from the reserve fund 500 dollars for the American Cancer Fund and 150 dollars for the Shafter Relief Committee. Additional local relief funds may be provided when need is shown. Special meeting held Tuesday at noon with Orvin Mettler as president, H. W. Kelly as secretary, Joe Cosgrove as treasurer, and Phil Johanneson and H. C. Neufeld present.

Shafter High School drama students travel to Delano on Saturday April 12 to join Kern County peers in a festival hosted by Delano High School drama. The Shafter group will stage a radio skit Hello Are You There and attend station tours have dinner and dancing.
