Local residents and Kern Homes residents protested after the Shafter City Council denied Obaid a conditional use permit for a S&J Quick Stop to sell alcohol. The heated decision followed concerns about beer and wine access near the Lerdo Highway housing tract, with support from City Manager Wade McKinney and opposition from teachers Yolanda Martinez and Gary Rodriguez. Obaid, longtime Shafter business owner, says the ruling ends a plan to serve the community while some residents contend alcohol would invite illegal activities.
