A letter argues against banning Communist ideas and in favor of free speech. It warns that persecuting one believer risks targeting others such as Catholics or Jews and quotes Milton to defend open discourse as essential to truth and democracy.
A Kern County Grand Jury list includes 19 members with local baker residents and Loren Voth of Wasco among the selections. Members come from Arvin Oildale Taft and Maricopa to investigate public offices and return indictments. Judge Bradshaw will charge them this month and hear a term report.
A Veterans' Memorial Building for Shafter moved to definite planning as $58,000 was approved for construction in the county budget this week.
Chief Petty Officer D Sides and Mrs D Sides announce the birth of a son Stephan Duane at the U S Naval Academy Annapolis on March 20 weighing 5 pounds 12 ounces Mrs Sides is formerly Neva Atten of Shafter High School.
The Wednesday Afternoon Club chose Mrs. Harry Vannatta as president for the coming year with O. G. Ohlsson as vice president and other officers including Floyd Raney J B Nugent W T Kinman J W Lassiter and A W Eckman. The nominating committee consisted of Mrs. J W Lassiter Mrs. E C Eckman and Mrs. Art Hemingson. The next meeting features the Book Section on April 16 with Jesse D. Stockton Kern County Superintendent of Schools as speaker.
Kern County Christian Endeavor members will meet at 7 30 Friday evening at the Union Congregational Church for a youth rally. Local Endeavor members will serve as hosts and hostesses.
Shafter High School students who drive cars were urged to cooperate with the city safety program in a special meeting held at the high school Tuesday afternoon. Hanley Witcher, assistant chief of police, spoke to thirty eight youths about driver responsibilities and penalties for safety violations. All but four had their drivers licenses. Two boys were driving on a special permit.
Shafter's 1947 Red Cross drive stands at 2636 dollars with 364 dollars needed to reach the 3000 dollar quota. Ed Warren, General Chairman, said final totals will be announced soon as chairmen submit reports and last minute donations come in. He urged remaining donors to contribute at the bank this week to close the gap.
Local merchants will hold a luncheon meeting Thursday at noon at the Shafter Motel. The session will discuss Shafter Thrift Days and the possibility of regular monthly meetings of the Merchants Bureau.
Wade Hamilton and Herbert Neuman are among veterans in the Wasco Shafter district taking advantage of flight training offered ex servicemen under the G I Bill of Rights program. The present class of prospective pilots are taking actual flying training at the Wasco airport with classwork in Bakersfield evening classes. Bill Young and Fernando Urranqui, Wasco flying enthusiasts, are credited with making this training course possible.
County firefighters responded Sunday morning to a truck fire at Shafter Airport on Bur bank Avenue and Shafter Highway. An auxiliary battery shorted and lit gasoline, causing an estimated loss of 100 dollars.
The Bakersfield American Legion veterans housing group received 48 Minter Field buildings for conversion to housing. War Assets Administration in Washington announced the award after a Bakersfield conference where Rep. Alfred J. Elliott said 57 units would be provided, with county cooperation returning 10 buildings to the F.P.H.A. for dispersal.
Key dates include Santa Barbara incorporation on April 9, 1850 and Petaluma incorporation on April 12, 1858. Fort Sumter fired on April 12, 1861 to start the Civil War. April 13, 1854 marks San Bernardino.
J C Ohanneson arrived at Kern County Airport yesterday from Sacramento. He was flown by Jim Camp with Sol Camp aboard. Janzen Ambulance met the plane and took him to his home in Shafter. Doctor Frank Ohanneson and Mrs J C Ohanneson accompanied the group.
A local birthday notice lists honorees and dates this week including Mrs. Joe Cosgrove April 13 Lorraine Gaedé April 10 Berit Pipkin April 14 Myron Myrick April 12 Beulah Neuman April 13.
Barney Casner four son of Mr and Mrs Barney Madison Casner of the Government Agricultural Camp was seriously injured in a side swipe on Highway 99 and Lerdo Road last Wednesday night. Nelly Earls and Lillian Robinson were driving the other cars and escaped injury. Barney's sisters Virginia six months and Joyce eighteen months were unharmed.
Shafter High School baseball lost two games in a Delano tournament over the weekend. The Generals defeated Shafter 7 to 3, then San Luis Obispo beat the locals 9 to 3. Don Long pitched well against Delano, while Steve Rodriguez impressed on the mound against San Luis Obispo.
Donald Long a Shafter High School junior was chosen to represent his school at Boys State a government training program sponsored by the American Legion The event runs in Sacramento from June 21 to 28 with the registration fee paid by the Shafter American Legion Post Opal Evans was selected earlier for Girls State
The John Lachenmaiers and Doctor and Mrs. William H. Moore of Bakersfield enjoy a Mazatlan fishing trip. Mrs. Moore caught the first fish, a 125 pound marlin. John then caught two 125 pound fish on the second day. They plan a week of deep sea fishing.
