City of Shafter announces a temporary skate park at the tennis courts behind Shafter High, with a full rules briefing Friday afternoon and an informal meeting at the high school to explain details. Skaters are asked to attend the fifth period lunch for interested high school students and to follow the new skating ordinance awaiting city council approval.
Shafter Community Chest schedules a Spring Garden Tour fundraiser for Saturday April 13 starting at 3 p.m. with hors d oeuvres at Manne Park. Open house for North Kern Christian School April 17 8:45 to 11:30 a.m. and Rabies Clinic April 17 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Shafter Fire Department lot. Students and families urged to attend school open house and pre registration.
Kern County Board of Trade data show Shafter leading with $46.5 million in February 2002, driven by the new Target Stores distribution facility. Bakersfield edged to second with $31.2 million, Wasco rose to $1.07 million, and county total reached $105.6 million. Twelve new homes valued from $69k to $112k were issued permits.
SHS Band and 20 chaperones depart for six days including a three day Bahamas cruise and two Florida days. Students endure long travel from LAX to DFW to Orlando then board cruise ship at Nassau visiting Cococay. Highlights include pampered dining aboard and poolside dancing with friends while performances occur at Hair Braiders Square Nassau and on the ship.
Shafter native Mark Montgomery retires after 24 years with Wasco and Kern County Fire Departments. A 1968 Shafter High School graduate, he served in Mojave and Wasco before settling in Shafter. He recalls memorable wrecks and fires, enjoyed station tours for youngsters, and plans fishing travels with his wife and seven grandchildren on a four-corner retirement trip.
