Clean-up Drive Planned Here For Week of Apr 24 30

Shafter residents will participate in an extensive clean-up campaign the week of April 24 30 led by Kern County Sanitation Redevelopment Group member W H Hitchcock. Citizens are urged to follow health measures including inspecting property weekly refuse disposal flyproofing buildings using metal cans with lids cleaning corrals poultry and rabbit areas avoiding burning garbage preventing sewage overflows and checking basements garages attics and yards for trash accumulation.

Ohanneson Opens Big New Sub Division in Shafter

Phil Ohanneson unveils a 40 acre restricted residential subdivision at Tulare and Beech Avenues in Shafter starting June 1. The Hampton Place site offers 1/4 mile from Shafter High and 1 mile from Richland Grammar with various acre tract prices from 600 to 2,000 dollars and corner lot prices at 750 inside city limits.

Shafter Area Leads County In 49 Potato Acreage

The Shafter area led Kern County in potato acreage with 15,245 acres, surpassing all districts. Edison was second with 12,407 acres. total county acreage reached 50,508 acres. Shipments from Edison start around early May due to cold weather. Shafter-Cawelo Wasco shipments begin mid May.

No Damage in School Fire Here Yesterday

The fire at the old Santa Fe School occurred at 4 34 yesterday afternoon. The Shafter Fire Department arrived to find the northwest wall in flames but authorities report no injuries and the blaze under investigation.

Installation of Officers Tuesday For Richland PTA

Richland P T A schedules its installation of incoming officers on Tuesday April 12. A spring fashion show by Richland School Home Economics will be held in the afternoon with student models under Miss Burnis Morris. Musical numbers by Richland students directed by Miss Martha Gloeckler will accompany the program. Mrs Rolf Jacobsen organized the afternoon and Miss Blythe Monroe will install the new officers including President Mrs Jack Battaglia and Vice President Mrs Clarence Neuman.

The spring track meet feature saw Dave Muir defeat Bill Carpenter by an inch for a $40 purse. Lachenmaier timed, Miller judged, Warren started. Muir donated the prize to the cub Scouts. Carpenter limped with a cracked knee and both teams faced a lively crowd.

Local Welfare Groups Aid 500 in Needy Crisis

Mrs. Jack Battaglia reports that 135 families in the Shafter district received aid this winter through the Salvation Army Richland PTA and Shafter Welfare Council. About 570 people, including over 300 children, benefited from grocery orders and home visits. Clothing for school children is in high demand, with the Richland PTA appealing to the community for garments.

The Shafter Potato Festival Committee will judge the amateur store decorating contest Monday afternoon April 18 at 2 p.m. Cash prizes of 25, 15, and 10 dollars go to the top three displays. Stores Moura fronts and windows are decorated in a Western Theme. no professional decorators may be hired.

Preliminary Art Contest Slated for Shafter District

Art enthusiasts in the Shafter district learn a preliminary art contest is scheduled for Monday April 18 at the Shafter Branch Library. Entrants must bring exhibits by 10 a m. The Shafter group includes 11 adults and five students with Wasco contributing two adults and seven students. Entries cover oils water colors crayons and charcoal. judging will precede several days of display before moving to Wasco Woman's Club House.
