The Wednesday Afternoon Club hosts Mrs Mary Lin ley Taylor as guest speaker at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday April 6 in the Woman's Club House. Lecturing on Recent Observations in the Orient she recounts travels from Britain to Korea, Russia, India, China and Japan with vivid firsthand impressions and travel writing.
Thirty Richland Elementary School students and entrants from Maple Rio Bravo and Lerdo Schools start work on posters for the Potato Festival poster contest directed by Miss Beulah Bartlett. Prizes range from 2 to 10 dollars with a grand prize for the best overall poster.
St. Therese's Altar Society announces a food sale and children's Easter basket sale on Saturday April 9 in front of Safeway. The event starts at nine o'clock in the morning, chairman Mrs. Henry Guidera notes.
Local firms and individuals planning to enter a float decorated car or other entry in the parade are urged to fill out the Entry Blank and return it to the Shafter Potato Festival Office Box X Shafter as soon as possible Time is running short and the Committee wants to plan. For information about parade barbecue rodeo or other festivities call the Festival Office at 9197.
Local funeral home owner Rem Bristow announced the addition of an Estey Electric Organ alongside the Stark Electrified Pipe Organ in the Shafter Funeral Home chapel. He said the organ may be used by any local church or church organization with proper advance arrangements.
Judge E. K. Grant reports Shafter's 1948 building permits surged to a record total of $1,204,450.00. Monthly figures show January 248,070.00. July 260,000.00. December 170,00.00, with other months detailing varying levels of construction activity.
Al Mortimore, a local attorney, was appointed City Attorney last month by the City Council. He also became Attorney for the Shafter Public Utility District by the District Board, succeeding A P Ohanneson who requested relief from both posts. Ohanneson had held the roles for several years.
Chamber of Commerce President Bill Stoller was presented a Ten-Gallon Hat at a Friday noon meeting as a token of support amid plans for the Shafter Potato Festival with a western theme. Western garb and rodeo will highlight the two day celebration after April 17, with guests Irene Kroeker and others in authentic costumes.
The Potato Festival Queen contest invites entrants aged 16 to 25 within a five mile radius of Shafter including Minter Village Kern Homes and Cawelo. Married women may enter. Entry blanks available at McClures Stringhams Johnson Neuman Shafter Mercantile Schirmer's Sprouse Reitz and The Press office.
The American Legion Auxiliary hosts a 7:00 p m meeting at the Congregational Church with Odako Campfire Girls as hostesses and entertainment. Miss Martha Johnson of Bakersfield will speak on life in South America, as the unit discusses April 19 initiations and the final by-laws reading with new member votes.
The Civil Service Board governing the Shafter City Police Department will meet tonight. Members listed include chairman Joe Frizzell and board members Wm. Stoller and Al Ingraham.
Barbara Wroten captured the grand prize in the annual American Legion Auxiliary poppy poster contest judged by Mrs. P. C. Guenther. Second place went to Harold Westbrook and Charles Carter for a joint entry. citations to Dick Kirkham and Boyce King. honorable mentions to Edward Baker Dwight Harvey Marshall Cotton and Donna Weitz.
Lee Austin of Arvin asks Kern County Board of Supervisors to permit renting the former army movie house at the air force base for a regular theatre serving Minter Village Kern Homes area. He offers 175 dollars per month for use as a cinema. The board is studying the proposal.
The famed speaker Dutch Derr will be guest of honor at the Shafter Kiwanis Club meeting today at noon. The event takes place at the Cawelo Motel with Derr known for statewide appearances.
Kern County Land Company directors convene in Bakersfield for the first time in its history. A field tour of leases in Kern County is scheduled today and tomorrow by chartered bus with executives from San Francisco New York Los Angeles and Europe in attendance. Louis Haggin unable to attend. The firm, organized in 1890 by Lloyd Texas and J B Haggin, markets more than 20000 cattle annually with operations centered in Kern County.
Ten Shafter high school boys appeared before Justice of the Peace E. K. Grant on petty theft charges for stealing gasoline from farmers tractors and farm equipment around Shafter. Constable Blake Witcher said the youths drained fuel from many farm machines in the area. Because they are minors, each boy must be accompanied by a parent. Judge Grant warned he would send them to Ker County juvenile court if the parents and boys did not accept sentence. Each boy fined ten dollars, paid two dollars monthly.
