Trustees propose a three year special tax to raise 1.50 local tax rate and fund a new twelve room unit and pool needs. Net building funds from wartime savings support construction while growth continues. May 27 vote will determine if new facilities proceed and align with county districts.
Services for Cordelia Ann Wroten 78 who died March 29 were held Monday at Janzen's Funeral Chapel with Rev F W Carter of Delano officiating. Burial was at Shafter Cemetery. She was born May 15 1869 in South Carolina and lived in the area 16 years. Survived by three sons Don Bill and Guy Wroten of Shafter. two daughters Jamie Coleman of Harrisonville Missouri and Dave Betts of Saint Louis Oklahoma. 11 grandchildren 9 great grandchildren and one sister and three brothers.
Mrs Desmond Fletcher and her son Tom sailed last Friday for San Francisco. Mrs Fletcher is expected back this week end after visiting relatives in Sacramento this week.
Kern County farmers and officials push to keep five farm labor camps under federal control beyond July 1 as legislation awaits December 31 deadline. Camp locations include Shafter Wasco Arvin and Lamont with Lamont Weed Patch South Shafter and Wasco served by the Office of Labor Production and Marketing Administration. Local chambers of commerce urge continued operation by the Department of Agriculture or county housing authority to avoid a disruption in housing for agricultural workers.
A planned gathering of representatives from ten local service organizations failed to convene at City Hall due to poor attendance. Only four reps showed up, prompting another push to organize a Local Welfare Committee to address the urgent funding and relief needs in the community.
The Press Narr Coates contest names Trashratz the apt descriptor for residents who litter streets and sidewalks in Shafter. A reader who preferred anonymity won the $5 prize. judges Al Finkbeiner Bill Stoller and Bill Johnston selected the term after review. The winner will be contacted for publication of identity in Tuesday's paper.
Mrs. Crew Sanderson visiting Mrs. Forrest S. Jones fell down stairs Wednesday night and broke her arm. She was transported by Jones Mortuary Ambulance of Wasco to Bakersfield for treatment and then to a home in Van Nuys. Mrs. Jones is the sister in law of Mrs. Sanderson.
Maple School Trustees vote to raise the school tax rate from 1.25 to 2.0 to fund repairs and expenses. Wildwood District withdrawal reduces funds, triggering a May 16 special election alongside trustee elections. Maple enrollment is reported as the largest in the school's history.
The Shafter Retail Merchants Bureau calls a luncheon meeting at the Shafter Motel next Thursday April 10 at 12 noon. Agenda covers future Shafter Thrift Days and other district matters. all local Retail Merchants urged to attend.
Judge E. K. Grant announced March fines totaling 1940 at the Shafter Justice Court. The note said the court had a busy month with 13 traffic violations on the first day of April. All cases tried before Judge Grant are county matters outside Shafter city limits.
The town of Shafter shows accelerated building with 73 000 dollars in new residential and business construction. Key projects include seven thousand dollar Pacific dwelling by A W Northam and eight thousand dollar Dalke Brothers homes on Pacific and State Street, plus nine thousand dollar residences for George Vannatta on Manuel and Cross. Elmer Anderson plans an eleven thousand dollar Acacia home. D Winter completes a six thousand dollar home on California. Business work includes H L Barnett’s Shafter Highway property, J E Klassen’s Central Avenue store, E P Hofman’s Lerdo Road garage, and an addition to the Associated Service Station at Five Points. All but three business buildings rise east of the Santa Fe tracks, signaling faster east-side residential growth.
Shafter plans an Easter Sunrise service at 5 30 a m on the high school athletic field under local ministers. A trumpet ensemble will play with invocation by Reverend E L Bradhurst and singing of Christ Arose and He Lives. Clergy from several churches lead in scripture prayer sermon and benediction with musical numbers by church choirs.
Shafter merchants and residents unite to honor local churches during Easter week. An Easter Sunrise service is planned with cooperation from area churches, matching last year’s event. The community page with a photo of every Shafter church appears on page 5.

Kern county Farm Bureau directors meet in Bakersfield and accept E G Buerkle’s resignation as state delegate to the annual convention. Ralph Pitney of Arvin elected to succeed him for the remainder of the term. Loren Voth remains alternate. Shafter Farm Center leads county in membership with 130 members and plans a regular meeting night.
Art Brownell, owner and manager of the local Western Auto store, says his business is not for sale and no changes are planned. He notes inquiries arose after a classified ad in another paper advertised a similar store in Shafter.
Marian Hammond and Mina of Bakersfield were Sunday dinner guests of Helen Holmes and Delphine Martin.
