The Shafter Recreation calls for first to third graders from all schools including Shafter Wasco and Buttonwillow with good attention spans and supportive parents. Students Suffer Pesticide Exposure At Rio Bravo Greely School
Twenty one Kern County firefighters responded after a crop-duster drift exposed thirty people at Rio Bravo Greely School on March 28. The Lorsban pesticide caused itching and stomach upset. twenty students and the bus driver were treated with decontamination showers. None required hospital care. The incident prompted triage setup but was not fatal. investigation by the Kern County Agriculture Department will determine if violations occurred.

Crash near Shafter claims one life near Highway 43
On March 29 a 52 year old Bakersfield woman Alice Samaripas Soliz died after a southbound Honda slowed to U turn and was struck by a southbound big rig near San Diego Ave. Savannah Samaripas of Shafter, 20, was hospitalized. the big rig driver was uninjured. Roadway closed during investigation ongoing.

Pardlee nabbed after high speed chase
On March 27 about 8 00 pm Buttonwillow deputies attempted to stop a vehicle driving erratically. The driver fled for 15 minutes along Seventh Standard Road west of Santa Fe reaching over 100 mph before surrendering near Shafter. Alejandro Dominguez 26 Wasco was booked on parole violations felony evading and drug paraphernalia. Investigation ongoing.

The Shafter American Legion Auxiliary selects its California Girls State Delegate Angela Simpkins and alternates Aubrie Dela Rosa and Heaven Rodriguez for the June 25 to July 1 session at Claremont McKenna College.
