California 2000 median income reaches 31122 amid tax return rise
State controller Kathleen Connell reported that Californians earned 15.9 percent more in 2000 with adjusted gross income totaling 993.5 billion, up from 856.9 billion in 1999. The average on all returns was 31122, a 5.9 percent rise, and joint returns averaged 57979. Marin County led with an 8.7 percent gain. Bay Area joint returns averaged 101660, Santa Clara 89475, San Mateo 84760, Contra Costa 79612. Los Angeles County housed 26 percent of returns, averaging 26478 overall and 48878 for joint returns. Santa Clara posted the largest county gain 11.9 percent, with joint returns up 10.3 percent there.
