Local man ends life at C and W Cafe
Henry Shorty Appen 64, Hamburg native and Shafter resident, hanged himself in a rear room of the C and W Cafe where he worked as janitor. A note in German told Fred Christianson goodbye. financial troubles and a seven thousand dollar stock loss eight years earlier are cited as likely causes. Funeral services were held at Janzen Funeral Home with burial in Shafter cemetery.

Dyes in Sunday Auto Accident
Mr and Mrs Sam Dye of Bakersfield and Ray Dye with children Harold and Barbara were in a serious crash between here and Rosedale on Sunday. Their car was badly damaged. Mrs Dye suffered painful bruises and Barbara a severe cut. They were reported on the road to recovery.

More than 250 dollars was raised for the Red Cross in Shafter surpassing a 100 dollar quota. Waldo Unruh of Shafter High School won first place in the Wasco auditorium contest Tuesday evening with his oration The Eyes of War. Dorothy Peak received high marks for Alcohol and Our Generation. Ted Wedel of Wasco took second. Minnie Lee Warnock of Bakersfield third. Unruh earned Shafter High School a Kern county oratorical plaque for 1936 1937.
