Terrible blast at Dupont powder works Fontanet Indiana devastates town. At least eighty dead and hundreds injured or homeless as schools and coal mines collapse. Militia deployed as recovery crews work amid wreckage and panicked crowds.
War balloon number 10 of the United States signal corps completed a 500 mile flight today at an average speed of 22 miles per hour, setting a new record in airship travel.
Seward Camp No 21 of the Arctic Brotherhood plans a semi annual election and initiation of Buffalo members tonight in the old town. The icy trail may cause trouble and serious accidents. the camp surgeon will be present with his tools.
Local merchants appoint a committee to investigate Reynolds companies in Alaska amid heavy debts to supply houses. Valdez reports suggest little savings from the wreck. about 250 laborers lose work and flee Valdez on the Saratoga. Gov Howgatt and officials urge unemployed to leave, with many heading to Bertha or Seattle. Reynolds inventories planned aboard the Yukon.
The steamer Yucatan arrived in Seattle with 900 tons of Katalla cargo onboard, unable to discharge at Seattle or transfer to lighters due to heavy seas. After a two day wait to discharge, worsening weather forced the vessel to steam to Valdez and Seward before returning to Seattle.
In Valdez on October 16 the preliminary examination proceeds for Georg Hazelet Ed Hasey and Duncan Dickson charged with second degree murder in the Keystone canyon shooting. Hazelet is a Guggenheim agent and the others are identified as involved.
Congressman Sulzer spoke in Seattle urging Alaska to govern itself. He argued Congress should not act as a city council for Alaska and claimed 99 percent of Alaskans favor home rule, calling it patriotic and essential for development.
The steamer Jeanie will bring mail on this trip instead of the Portland, causing Portland’s sailing delay. Jeanie left Seattle October 12 and passed Sitka on Thursday night October 17. A new strike on the east fork of the Chandlar is reported.
The Oriental liner Tartar collided with the steamer Charmer in fog last night in the Gulf of Georgia. The Charmer returned to Vancouver with no known deaths, its bow damaged and anchor deployed as rescue efforts continued.
In Juneau on October 14, Hoggatt defeated National committeeman John G Heid as Gov Hos election ticket won the Republican primaries by a strong vote majority. A total of about 400 ballots were cast.
The seismograph in Washington D C recorded an earthquake this morning more violent than the 1906 San Francisco event. Officials believe it occurred somewhere in mid ocean as there are no reports of a land tremor.
Berkeley scientists say the powerful quake last Wednesday originated in the Pacific Ocean between Mexico and Hawaii. Miners from Poor Man's Creek carried about $6000 in gold dust from the inlet on the Saratoga. Other miners from the Yentna district traveled on the Saratoga or Bertha with small dust sums. The Name Nugget notes Teller was recently depopulated by a stampede to Shellman Creek after rich strikes.
Latouche Copper Mining Company reports steady ore output shipped from Barracks dock by Northwestern boats. President Flames Girdwood toured Seward on the Bertha en route to Latouche from Turnagain Arm, noting rapid development and a 700 ton bunkered dock. Copper shares were again volatile as Amalgamated joined the drive against Guggenheim holdings. Amalgamated pressured Heinze to sell yesterday. Railroad stocks remained unsettled and the market mood was uneasy across interests on the street.
F Augustus Heinze will be able to pay all just claims against him as William B Ridgeley, comptroller of the currency, reports the Mercantile National bank of New York will have directors resignations accepted after Heinze resigned when his firm failed on the stock exchange.
State Bank Examiner Collins oversees the Heinze bank in Butte Montana after it closed this week and declines to release a statement on the situation.
San Francisco October 17 The bonds of the United Railways are going begging at 65 in the open market. The strike has been extremely costly to the corporation and in its great need of money it has thrown a large block of bonds on sale at once.
San Francisco reports Patrick Calhoun is out as president of United Railways. Charles Black from New York will succeed him, with other officials also expected to depart. Calhoun faces imminent trial in the superior court for alleged bribery of supervisors.
