Valdez reports the Alaska Home Railway halted operations due to funds lack as 500 workers gather for potential trouble. Police appointed, destitute fed by city, bank attached, Reynolds bank closed, exodus to Katalla planned, ministers hurt by bank collapse, but some say mining remains solvent and protests await.
Jerome Godley was appointed receiver of the Council City and Solomon Railroad to prevent an execution of the road to satisfy a judgment. The receiver will seek authority to issue indebtedness certificates to meet current demands. Harriman ordered managers to cut operating costs and halt new work across his lines.
The Sextile Alaska Copper Company is developing a high grade ore body on Latouche Island near the waterline. A ledge 40 to 50 feet wide shows 20 percent ore with a four foot pay streak. Copenhagen reports the exploration vessel Fridjof was wrecked yesterday on an island in Segisjord. All the crew are presumed dead. Robert Michaelsen arrived Saturday night from Mills Creek where he worked his hydraulic property during the summer.
The Alaska road commission reports completed Sunrise Trail connecting Sunrise to Resurrection Bay and Hope to Sunrise with 31 miles of nine to twelve foot wide road, bridges, and corduroy. Five additional miles and a Seward to Bear River route improve homestead access and winter sled trails.
Reports from the cruiser Buffalo indicate the United States is placing rapid fire guns on St Paul and St George islands to defend seal rookeries from Japanese poachers. The Alaska undersea cable was restored Monday morning near Sitka after a reef tore insulation but did not sever the line. Gen. James Allen of the War Department Signal Bureau urges laying a second cable to Alaska and recommends boosts to telegraph and cable service.
The San Francisco Democratic party nominated Acting Mayor Edward R. Taylor to run in November. The platform calls for vigorous prosecution of grafters.
