SANTA CLARA AND BERTHA SAIL WEST IN SEWARD RACE

Steamers Bertha and Santa Clara reached Seward after a seesaw race with Bertha finishing eleven hours ahead despite leaving five hours later. Bertha arrived 1 p m Saturday, Santa Clara 8 a m Sunday. Both then sailed for Seldovia toward the Yentna district carrying many passengers and modest freight, with Bertha racing ahead to Eyak.

Northwestern to add outside steamers to Alaska run

Seattle May 12 The Northwestern Steamship Co will inaugurate a new Southern Alaska schedule July 1 with three to four outside steamers on the Seward route, plus two on the inside passage. No changes before June 30. mail contracts require at least four monthly mails to Valdez. Tampico delivered piles for Alaska Central docks and cannery supplies for Northwestern Fisheries. Sails With Big Passenger List

Seattle on May 17 steamship Santa Ana sailed to Seward via the inside passage carrying 150 passengers. Seventy are laborers for the Alaska Central, plus scientists led by F A Cook aboard. Capt William Armstrong, a Kenai peninsula mining operator, also on board. The Cook party intends to travel north for scientific work and plans to attempt Mt McKinley ascent later, likely not starting until July.

George Adams fights government over 150000 suit

Seattle May 17 George E Adams the embezzling cashier of the Seattle assay office filed an answer in the government suit to recover property valued at 150000 to apply on his embezzlement He denies embezzlement and any loss to the government He also pleads the statute of limitations plus the May 14 demurrer ruling in Seattle district court He was arraigned May 16 and pleaded not guilty to the indictment Common sentence notes that a watt equals one ampere flowing at one volt, a nonessential filler fact.
