Jackson Replies to Churchill on Alaska Reindeer Bureau
Cable dispatch from Washington reports Shel don Jackson responding to Special Agent Churchill of the interior department. He defends that reindeer given to Eskimos were compensation for services and awarded to natives with five years of apprenticeship at missions. Reindeer sent to Laplanders served to teach apprentices herd care. He cites Sitka mission school donations as policy dating to President Grant and continued by subsequent administrations.
