The two year old child of Mr and Mrs G F Todd of Powersville died after drinking poison found on a shelf above the kitchen table. The mother flushed the poison with emetics but the child suffered spasms and died at 6 pm despite medical care. The incident highlights accidental poisoning in a domestic setting.
Iowa Falls on September 6 Mrs James Cogewell owed her life to prompt medical aid after a morphine overdose mix up. A physician had prescribed morphine hypodermically but the wrong vial was used causing spasms. Daughter noticed the error and medical help arrived. she survived after hours of danger.
Five men were killed instantly when a threshing machine engine exploded on a farm near Bykelyn, north of Mason City along the Northwestern road. Owner Daly perished with the crew, including Christ Snuke, Temen Seymour, Willard Dadlew, and Abe Fuster. The blast wrecked the straw stack and left bodies unrecognizable.
Thomas Curtin aged resident of Monticello reportedly attempted suicide by tying a shawl strap around his neck and looped to a stair banister. His daughter found him after he had fallen down the stairs and he later recovered briefly to express disappointment at the outcome. Curtin has lived in Monticello over thirty years and was described as an honest, industrious citizen. Ill health is cited as the reason for the act.
Mrs. Henry Miller, a farmer living near Siegel east of Waverly, was badly burned Saturday morning when a gasoline stove exploded after she moved the fuel tank outdoors and reattached it. Her head face right arm and side were severely scorched. doctors say recovery uncertain and injuries cover about a quarter of her body.
Grundy county court opens with the high profile case of Elifer charged with murdering his wife. He bought chloroforin using her name in Marshalltown, and she was found dead next morning. Investigations cited a note and suspicions of another woman. Ex-priest Seguin and local Dike businessmen face possible trials, likely delays noted.
Fort Dodge jury instructed to return verdict for the city in a $20,000 damages suit brought by M Wheeler against Fort Dodge. Wheeler claimed injuries from a July 4 accident when a vaudeville wire act performer fell from a 300 foot suspended harness from the courthouse. The harness broke, sending the performer into the crowd. Wheeler was knocked unconscious and hospitalized. The city argued it was not liable for the accident and witnesses noted the large crowd.
About 106 depositors at the First Nation bank in Grinnell met Saturday afternoon and appointed a committee to look after depositor interests in the bank settlement. They expect to avoid suits against directors and note assets total about 340000 with 861000 in deposits and 40000 cash, leaving a 20000 shortfall.
Franklin County report notes William Harris of Richland township and his eight sons, all of voting age, consistently support the Republican ticket. The family, farming near Hampton, votes together at Richland township polls and is described as the largest voting family yet found, all aligned with Roosevelt and Fairbanks.
Dr. C J Bishop of Agnew Michigan reports using Foley's Honey and Tar in three very severe pneumonia cases with good results in every instance. The advertisement urges refusing substitutes and lists Mary Dou M. Munger & Co and Wané Tons as distributors.
Fort Dodge hosted the largest Imbor Day celebration with Waterloo visitors in the crowd. Two trains brought guests, red bands from Waterloo and Shell Rock marked entry, and the day featured two Fort Dodge Iowa league baseball games between Watarios and Fort Dodge teams. The event ended without accidents and the city welcomed guests warmly.
Boone and Marshalltown joined a Labor Day celebration with about 300 visitors from Marshalltown. Labor Commissioner EB D Brigham and S. D. Ryer spoke to roughly 3,500 attendees. The day ended with the Boung Greyhounds defeating the Marshalltown Greyhounds in a top game of the season.
Masestine observed Labor Day with a parade and holiday festivities. By noon athletic contests bicycle and horse races drew about 7,000 spectators. Streets were jammed by 10 am as floats and nearly a thousand workers marched. No address was given.
Labor Day was marked in Dubuque with a picnic at Shooting Park drawing about a thousand attendees. County Attorney Thomas J. Fitzpatrick delivered the main address, followed by athletic events in the afternoon and a band concert in the evening. For the first time in years the town did not hold a parade.
Burlington Labor Day featured a large parade with about two thousand union members, remarks by Senator W. W. Dodge and Mayor Caster, and a public wedding of Otto Ganz and Ida Cooper at Emmer's park. The evening concert and vaudeville ended with gifts of $25 cash and a cooking range to the couple.
In Ottumwa on September 6 two thousand union men from city labor organizations paraded through the streets to cheers from thousands of friends and visitors. After the procession they and their families moved to Caldwell Park for an afternoon program, where Mayor T H Pickler delivered the welcome address to the laboring throng.
A Clinton Iowa audience heard a brief address on socialism. The principal address of the day was delivered by 8 J Kent of Lincoln Nebraska, national organizer for the Carpenters and Joiners Union of America.
Oskaloosa on labor day drew the largest crowd in the city’s history with estimates ranging from twenty thousand to forty thousand as a monster labor demonstration, the baseball season’s end, and a Barnum and Bailey circus attracted attendees. J B Sullivan of Des Moines spoke as labor day orator with other addresses by Mayor Williams and Union leader White. over four hundred union members attended. A circus tent top from Bridgeport arrived by express at a cost of two hundred one dollars. Davenport hosted a neighboring-city union celebration with Rock Island and Maine groups. five thousand people attended the Grand Island resort event where Mayors Skinner McCandle and Philips spoke.
New Sharon September 6 a Christian church minister Rev T J O Lan nor faced arrest threat if he sold Bibles in town mayor blocked evangelists selling without a license The minister protested with a printed notice in which he would sell Bibles to any wanting them to support law and resist tyranny Fort Dodge September 7 Joseph Krefman a wealthy farmer died of heart disease while unloading oats He fell from the wagon and expired leaving seven children youngest two oldest sixteen The death came as a surprise to his family with no prior warning of heart trouble
Waterloo begins enforcing a new burial permit law. A physician certificates the disease and duration, then the registrar and cemetery association authorize burial. The rule applies to all interments in the city cemeteries including reburials and stillbirths. The registrar’s office requires a deputy when unavailable.
State board of control awarded about ten tons of liver fourteen tons of sausage six tons of Bologna and large beef orders to Armour Swift and Cudahy for state institutions. Contracts cover the last quarter of the year with prices kept secret. Other items include bacon ham and various pork quantities spread among Alamosa Davenport Eldora Madigan Independence Marshalltown Mitchellville Mt Pleasant and Vinton.
The September term of the district court in Bampton begins September 12 with major cases. Carrie Schmitt sues E. S. Blydenburgh for 3800 claiming two notes were stolen. Blydenburgh is jailed for life for his wife’s murder and will not testify, but his deposition will be used. The case, moved from Hardin county for fairness, will start mid next week with top Northern Iowa counsel.
Onawa September 7 Addison Oliver filed a $40 000 damages claim in the Monona Harrison county ditch case. He objects to the land taking for improvements arguing the land is a single stock farm with valuable wet lands for grass pasture and hunting. He says the proposed ditch will increase flooding and overflow, affecting fences and hay and pasture lands.
New Hampton Iowa September 7 a severe electrical storm Monday night around 10 oclock lashed Floyd and Chickasaw counties. Lightning struck two Charles City residences and a Lonis dwelling, all burned. The Tonia Catholic church steeple suffered damage and the Chicago Great Western depot at Devon was completely burned.
Sealed bids for the Marshalltown federal building contract were opened in Washington. Newman & Hay of St Paul quoted 65260 as the lowest, with Lauritsen & Bro of Fergus Falls at 8350. Other bids ranged from 630,934 to 87178 from firms in Milwaukee Chicago Janesville and Dixon. No local bidders appeared.
Sioux City reports three hundred pickets held a referendum on the packers proposal. It is unofficially stated a majority voted to resume work. Charles McGuire, president of the Hog Butchers Union, declined to publish the vote result.
In Charles City on September 7 a severe Osage storm caused a wild lightning fatality. Seventeen cattle in Avery Brush’s pasture on the Osage farm owned by the Osage banker were killed by a single bolt.
Des Moines news reports the Iowa Democratic State Central Committee pushing broadside campaign efforts. National and state groups plan to supply free newspaper supplements to Democratic papers in multiple districts to boost Wadsworth’s reelection seek. The plan echoes Hearst era tactics, though success is uncertain and tied to tariff and political shifts. Julian W. Richards notes the likely distribution across districts and the limited support in others.
In Bronx City a jealous wife shot through a concealed revolver at a room in a housing facility. Mrs Grace Butch, divorced from her husband, and Mrs Mayne Seddington were involved. Heddington was fatally wounded. The incident followed a dispute over a former lover.
