A severe electrical storm yesterday battered Waterloo with two main bursts. Cattle were killed on the Benedict farm and a shed, cable lines, and power equipment suffered extensive damage. Wires were down citywide, trains halted briefly, and trees fell across streets and tracks.
Denver reports a severe rainstorm turning streets into flood channels with washed away walks and inaccessible roads. The city lacks sewers and drainage, creating streams and lakes in the road as Waterloo visitors ride the Rapid Transit and wait at the depot to return.
A tornado north of Waterloo struck the W. 8. Bishop farm two miles east, demolishing a large barn and blowing a chicken house into the kitchen. Mrs. George French and Mrs. J. W. Beebe, with three children, sheltered in the barn. Mrs. French was lightly injured and Mrs. Beebe scratched by fence barbs. Several outbuildings were toppled, damage estimated at about 1000 dollars, with roads blocked by debris and trees uprooted.
Nashua reported heavy rain and wind yesterday turning the fair grounds to a mud field. Visitors from across the state, including many from Waterloo, left disappointed as racing was canceled due to the three hours of torrents beginning at 2 pm and ending around 5 pm.
Hudson residents believed a cyclone was near after a severe storm passed yesterday afternoon. Wind and rain caused damage as trees and stalls fell, though no fires were started. Special to Reporter.
A severe rain and wind storm near Fairbank damaged property including two barns. Samuel Collensky’s barn five miles southwest burned after a lightning strike at about 6 PM, destroying hay stock and more though a team was saved by neighbors. Another blaze struck John Clinchinan’s farm six miles north, around 10 PM, with flames spreading to outbuildings and causing extensive losses estimated in the hundreds of dollars.
Katharine F. Larrabee and Earl Mayer were married last evening at the bride’s mother Mrs Anna Larrabee’s home, 1198 Franklin Street. Rev H G Beeman presided. A small reception followed with Stella Fisher Raye Cretzimeyer and Mrs Carson of Shell Rock assisting. The bride wore a pale blue blouse suit, and the groom, an Illinois Central shop employee, has lived in Waterloo about two years after coming from Desport.
Des Moines area endured a severe storm with lightning and high winds. F G Minnich of Coon Rapids was killed by lightning near his home two miles southwest of the town. Barnum Bailey tents were blown down in Iowa City and several farms near Manon City suffered damaged buildings. Des Moines reported telegraph and telephone wires down, minor fire, and scattered tree damage.
The Gilham Ark mining column reports a major zinc and lead find at the Banout mine owned by Southern Zinc and Copper Mining Co. Supt Morrell unearths a vast ore body from the east shaft, with thousands of tons in sight. An extra shift runs the 10 ton mill day and night as investors eye the district’s potential and other properties await capital to open.
The St Joseph Catholic church basement chapel was dedicated at 6 AM with a sodality program. A new 40 by 80 foot room for hued services was fitted behind Scallon hall and will be used as a chapel. Rev. Father Heatherington of Volga and Rev. Father Cooney spoke, with music by the sisters school choir. Heatherington praised Watering members for the effort, calling it the best in the state.
La Porte City district fair association secretary B L Manwell announced Waterloo Day for four day May event starting Thursday. Auto race on Waterloo machines offers 50 purse with 25 to winner 15 to second 10 to third. Rock Island special train being arranged for Waterloo and Cedar Falls visitors on Waterloo and Cedar Falls Day.
G A Martin has plans for three modern houses to rise at once on the corner of Franklin and East Second streets. Two houses face Second street and one faces Franklin. Each will be two stories high with modern conveniences, costing about 2500 dollars. Contractor Ahlen to build one, Shippey and Burt to build the other two.
