Reported disappearance of key defense note from Grundy Center clerk’s office tied to W. A. Slifer murder trial. Note had been offered to show Mrs Slifer committed suicide and prompted acquittal. Motive for theft remains unknown as witnesses discuss possible reasons.
Atlantic reports attorney John Woepeth was judged insane by county commissioners and ordered confined at Clarida State Hospital. Grand jury indicted him on three counts including unbecoming conduct and obtaining money on safe pretenses. He has shown violent swings, mania accusing Satan, and has largely withdrawn from public life with a wife and four children.
Iowa Falls reports that once the Lillooet melange is cleared and the Frazer river claim can resume, Hawkeye Gold Mining will have its innings and financial matters of the rival Lillooet will be investigated. An Hawkeye attorney is in town, with possible surprises from Hawkeye's side after Lillooet records are settled.
At 5 PM yesterday in Albia the wife of Professor H. Hollingsworth was thrown from a buggy and killed. Professor Hollingsworth was seriously injured with a broken jaw and other injuries.
The Albia school superintendent, a popular figure for fourteen years with three sons, arrived in Albia from Centerville. Mrs. Hollingsworth was seriously hurt in a towaway incident several weeks ago and has since been able to rise. Their horse became frightened at a train.
Nov 26 Logan reports scarlet fever outbreaks prompting Mayor J C Millman to close public schools until December 3 and order children under 16 to stay home. Prosecutions may follow for breaches as all public gatherings are canceled. one affected is a child of Mayor Millimas.
Dramatic dispatches describe murder scenes at Jacob Johnson and George Todd farms. Blood traces, emptied floor box, and missing cash raise questions about killers who raided portable wealth. reports note a trap door under a center-hour box and possible burial sites as investigators hunt suspects and motive.
In Shenandoah Iowa a seed house manager found a back-slip in a seed order from G Roberts of Wabaska Arkansas. The note records a 1888 payment of five hundred seventy six dollars for a negro girl named Charlotte aged about fourteen or fifteen years with a lifetime slave claim.
Waverly reports indicate the Bremer county district court closed its longest session since 1888. Divorce records rose to six, indictments remain undisclosed amid rumors targeting saloon keepers. three major criminal trials were postponed on request. A breach of promise suit by Lucretia Jennings was dismissed, with only costs paid.
In Spirit Lake on November 26 Milford residents working for Midland Telephone built a line to Spirit Lake, installing five miles of poles and wiring to the courthouse at Raylight. Western Electric, defending its exchange rights, filed an injunction and plans a district court hearing in January to contest the project amid claims the delay aims to push work until spring.
George French twenty four, living with farmer Elliot north of Cambridge, lost his hand and had his arm amputated below the elbow after his hand was drawn into a corn shredder at the Ashford farm southeast of Nevada. He was hurt while clearing clogging cornstalks and was treated in Nevada before returning home.
Martin Hanselik, severely injured by a pocket knife wound to the throat, wandered through the woods and reached a farm house frightening residents. An ambulance sent five mules for him, and he was transported to Mercy hospital with faint hopes of recovery.
A clock of historical value from the Putnam family was found in the home of F. F. Wilbur in Toledo Ohio. The wooden wheeled relic, dating to revolutionary times, has long circulated within the family and still keeps accurate time. The item is noted as a curiosity and a link to forefathers in a City of Toledo report.
Mitheton November 25 Eddie Budzine a seven year old boy nearly died from blood poisoning after a classmate stabbed him with a pin during a prank in the upper room. Within twenty four hours infection set in and the limb swelled as pain persisted. After nearly five weeks he cannot yet bear weight on the limb. Greene November 25 Special to Reporter Joel Doore and Sarah Cush ing celebrated their seventieth wedding anniversary yesterday. They married on Thanksgiving day November 27 1834 in Dover Maine. Six children born four living nearby. two died in the Civil War. Doore is ninety one and his wife eighty seven. They remain sharp and active. Pauline Huckins hosted a large family gathering with a Thanksgiving dinner. relatives enjoyed a festive day.
In Webster City a Jersey cow owned by Henry Rushmeyer was saved after a veterinary surgery by Dr J E Williams. The stomach was opened near the backbone and two bushels of corn removed, then the wound closed. The cow recovered and began eating again.
Dr Robert Forbes drew surprise among ministers and laymen at Eldora during the Methodist church semicentennial and Marshalltown district session. He urged Sabbath walks and children picking wildflowers in woods for joy, rather than solemn taboos, during the fiftieth anniversary celebration. Forbes, from Philadelphia, serves as assistant secretary of the Church Extension Society and has a history as circuit rider in northern Minnesota and later roles in Duluth, St Paul, and the Minnesota legislature.
Trae November 24. Hon A G Rankin temperance orator and head of the state marshal movement has resumed work in Iowa. He addressed Trae last night and will campaign statewide for the marshal bill next year amid mixed legislative support. Rankin plans to cover 127 cities and towns and push the measure through the year.
Dubuque reports Rev. C G M Steffens returning from Pittsburg praises Mrs Thaw as a superior woman with broad charity and intellectual calibre. He criticizes western papers for their portrayal of Mrs Thaw and denies claims she urged her son Harry Thaw to follow the family wishes. He says the Thaw home is congenial and happy and the sensational recent episode is not a family focus.
E L Colburn of Des Moines bought the final two tickets for the Iroquois Theatre performance in Chicago last December. He was present during the tragedy and spent the day aiding victims, keeping the last sold tickets as grim reminders of the disaster.
J J Johnson advances from chief clerk at Fort Dodge to agent at Iowa Falls succeeding C W Bell who moves to the southern lines at Hammond Louisiana. EB J Hedman becomes Fort Dodge chief clerk replacing Johnson. Hen Ob sen becomes cashier replacing Hedman. Ed Frantz moves to succeed Olsen as freight receiving clerk and C N Consigny of Cedar Falls will take Frantz's previous duties. Changes take effect at once.
Mrs. Bertha Merritt of West Pleasant Street was examined by insanity commissioners who ordered her confined in the Mt Pleasant hospital. She insists on visiting Keokuk to see a childhood sweetheart she believes remains young, despite relatives and officials stating she is about 20. She will be taken to Mt Pleasant for treatment today.
Foreman John Schrin er finds a sealed bottle on Doerr Island containing a doomed family’s diary from April 1841. A mother writes of leaving home for California, encounters Indians, and the death of husband and children before sealing the note and hoping someone finds it. The faded writing is displayed at the Gem City office for public viewing.
Preston tale ties twin boys to congressional race of A F Dawson. Parents Chris and Mrs Schlemme of differing politics named Don and Dawson if Dawson won, Wade and Watero if Wade won. The twins slept through the Tuesday vote, with 180 votes deciding their names.
P d Duffy of asley writes a testimonial stating Foley’s Kidney Cure helped him after trying many advertised remedies. He claims prior to use he could hardly get up and describes marked improvement after following his druggist recommendation. The note is part of a local advertisement chain with Lobby Don Munger & Co and Wangter Bros. & Tadd mentioned.
