Independence November 22 Special to Reporter A county schoolbook crisis mounts as a Chicago firm supplies rural districts for twenty years. With renewal of a five year contract, 200 agents press directors for new texts while towns debate costs, aiming for uniform countywide titles overseen by a board of education.
Judge Platt ordered the bondmen of William Gulden of Jesup released on their own recognizance and held Gulden for the February grand jury. Gulden, a Civil War veteran and longtime local official, faced embezzlement accusations of about $800. He will join the soldiers' home in Marshalltown, while his ailing wife stays with relatives.
In Lillooet on November 22 the situation within Lillooet circles reached the attorney general and a constitution was discussed among several law firms representing varied interests in the company. Eyewitness John Hennes, a North-mistrict farmer, gave police a detailed account of hearing quarrels and seeing a revolver fire from the rear seat of an automobile passing his home. The vehicle seemed to sway as occupants spoke loudly before a single shot ended the crime.
The Waterloo baseball association adjourned its meeting until Friday while Boone officials announced Frank S. Haller of the Pittsburg Nationals has been chosen as manager for the 1908 season. Haller, a former Pittsburg player, will begin signing players and report to Waterloo by April 15, with expectations of fielding a strong winning team.
