William R. Yeisen known as Billy Peigen, born August 13, 1800 in Racine Wisconsin, died after months of illness near Gillespie Illinois. He leaves a wife a son and two daughters and many Eldora relatives. Remains will be buried at three this afternoon in Eldora after arriving from the old home of B Persen. He was a member of the M W A lodge and carried life insurance of 2000. An obituary will follow in the next issue.
Frank J. Cheney declares he is senior partner of I J Cheney Co in Toledo Ohio and will pay one hundred dollars for any catarrh case not cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure. Notary confirms oath on December 6 1836. The ad promotes Hall's Catarrh Cure taken internally with testimonials, priced 75 cents, sold by druggists.
A collage of old sayings and quips on marriage labor and daily life contrasts fortunes and fates. It notes aging longevity rates nine in ten women and men, a war veteran used in whiskey ads, Salvation Army fundraising, and observations on wages, cooking, and education.
The 40th annual Iowa State Sabbath School Association convention met in Ottumwa in June 1916 with a large turnout. Key figures included President Mrs B F Mitchell, Vice President Mrs A R Paddock, and speaker W C Pearce on Winning the Boys and Girls. A forward movement fund raised 400 dollars. new officers include A N Wambleton, J A Laphan, M G Munn, J F Hardin, W B Clemmer, B F Mitchell, and Prof Elias Handy.
Mrs Elizabeth Stoner died at her daughter Mrs Elmer Mossman’s home after a lingering illness on Saturday June 17 1905 aged 67. A brief service was held Monday at the Mossman home conducted by Rev Stanley of the Baptist church, then she was taken to Radcliffe to join relatives for funeral services and burial the same day. The daughter and son-in-law accompanied the mother to Radcliffe and a full obituary will appear in Saturday’s issue.
A public wedding notice lists J as Bales and Leora Anna Caroline Johnson among the couples. Eldora and Ackley names appear with Miranda Meyer and Sidney Smith. Iowa Falls and Martin H Darlington Luella D Darlington are also mentioned in a fragmented Iowa Falls context.
The Presbyterian board of publication and Methodist book concern along with Fleming Revel & Co. and David C Cook drew crowd of about 500. The closing session Friday afternoon praised Sabbath School work, weather was fine, and delegates promised to attend next year’s convention in Council Bluffs.
June 18 What Cheer clashed over claims of the state’s smallest boy. Eldora’s 18 year old Bobrov allegedly weighs under forty pounds, while William Humes Jr near What Cheer, 17 years old, stands 39 inches tall and weighs 39 pounds. The Herald bets Eldora’s boy wins in size and wit.
Davenport reports Roy Gabriel a thirteen year old pupil at the Soldiers Orphans Home drowned in Duck Creek near the Industrial School after swimming. The boy from Oskaloosa is the son of the institution's cook Mrs Gabriel, while the matron of the Eldora school is named. The notice previews a Saturday sale of Wheeler screens.
A. H. Barnes of Union sold fifteen acres of timber land adjoining A. L. Bowen’s farm two miles northeast of Union for 1500 dollars, about 100 per acre. Bowen valued the land highly for the area, noting Hardin county land’s high value as comparable to farm land per acre.
An ad touts Hollistec's Rocky Mountain Tea as improving digestion and assimilation, creating new red blood and bone, and serving as a tonic for the sick and weak. It notes the product is available as tea or tablets for 35 cents at Starr Drug Co.
Hardin County prison life gains a canine companion as Frank Rainsbarger, a long time inmate at Anamosa Penitentiary, is permitted to keep a pet. The poodle puppy was gifted by Mr. and Mrs. Liebig after a series of humane actions and a prior pug death. Rainsbarger, 45, once a noted midwest criminal, now leads the prison carpenter shop and is treated as a model prisoner alongside his brother Nate, both in gray uniforms without stripes.
Rainsbarger faced murder charges in Hardin county for killing his brother in law Mr Johns while also being accused in multiple other crimes tied to an outlaw band with several family members involved.
