Marshall county grand jury declines to indict Grant Drury for his wife’s murder and he is released to return home on the Liscomb farm. The Herald notes Geo E Gilman as a likely mayoral candidate while not seeking office. Grundy Center hears Wm Slifer in preliminary. held to grand jury with bail denied. A chemist reports inhaled chloroform traces in the wife’s stomach and organs. The M E church is crowded.
Movements in Eldora record arrivals and departures. Mrs. Harry Phillips remains in town while Jno T Boylan and Ambrose Miller visit. Mrs M L Hurley returns from Sioux City. H E Bateson travels to Webster City on business. W Clover of Abbott calls, Ambrose Miller runs store in Abbott but visits family Sundays. O M Barnes of Whitten on business. Postmaster Luiken of Steamboat Rock socializes in Eldora. Mayor H C Chapin of Union visits on business. Mrs Wendell Wallace Huston of Chicago arrives to visit Miss Susie Nicholls. Mrs J R Frey returns from Boone after illness of sister Mrs Coffman. Fred Whitney of J W Farwell & Co visits. Mrs Harry Hole travels to Peoria due to sister’s illness. J W Peisen returns from Keokuk to spend time with family. Herald notes Mr Feisen as example of honest man amid local tax gripes.
Mr E A Ferrin reports to Eldora on the Hast East capital led project, noting no U S line runs with such low per mile population and that financiers will view it as an experiment. Ferrin heads east for New York Philadelphia and Boston to refine financing and construction terms before returning. The Union Star also covers the Wednesday club gathering with Mrs Chassell’s talk on Industrial Training in Public Schools.
A Hardin county farmer, Henry Engleking, planted eighty acres to popcorn and harvested 1,200 bushels with a bid of $2 per bushel, amounting to 2400 dollars. An Eldora correspondent warns that if all Hardin farmers followed suit, overproduction would crash prices and profit. Diversified farming remains best. Dr Wood's Norway Pine Syrup ad follows.
The Herald aims to greatly increase its county correspondents in the coming weeks.
