Going After Coal Near the City

A meeting at W J Moir's office convened Monday evening to plan sinking a shaft or drilling to assess coal prospects just north of the city. A committee was formed to raise funds for the project, already securing a considerable sum, aiming to determine coal quality and develop local mines soon. Exemption Rule Sets 1903 Start For Veteran Property

Iowa Attorney General Mullan ruled that the $800 property exemption for veterans of the Mexican and Civil Wars and widows cannot apply to 1902 taxes. The 29th General Assembly created the exemption but lacked instruments to implement it until 1903, due to timing of assessment and forms. The opinion concludes the exemption becomes operative with assessments for 1903.
