The Herald notes a wood pile thief at a neighbor’s residence and reports a local lecture by Col. Bain on Among the Masses. It mentions community meetings, school events, debates, and upcoming entertainments with multiple local figures and places including Owasa Eldora Mitchellville and Jackson township.
The Herald reports a movement to sink a 300 to 500 foot shaft near Eldora to prove or disprove paying coal veins beneath the earth. Geologists doubt found coal in paying quantities at this depth, but local hopes persist. Fred Berninghausen leads the fundraising effort, with additional contributions expected.

A Poor Relation was presented to a large enthusiastic Wisner audience Friday. Horace Lewis as Noah Vale drew strong praise for pathos and humor, equal to Sol Smith Russell. The strong, balanced company included Mrs Horace Lewis as Portia Albee and Marie Harriott as Dolly Mage. Curtain calls greeted the star, and the company earned wide approval.
Will J. Moir visited the high school Monday. Miss Newton began teaching Monday after completing a course at $80. Mrs. Lewis and Mss Crockett, the former teacher, were noted visitors. The sophomores enjoyed a bob ride Monday evening with a good-time report. Drs Diehl and Kier, dentists, are in Smith's new building.
Mrs Fitz of Steamboat Rock nearly died after a neighbor mistaken embalming fluid for brandy and poured it into her drink. She fell from a church walk, injured her hip, and lay unconscious until her son found her. Medical treatment followed and she gradually improved. She is the mother of Prof Itz of Ellsworth College and former Steamboat Rock school principal.
The Eldora Iowa board of library trustees reports a year of growth with higher library use, especially among children. Total attendance reached 12013 with 9288 books drawn, fiction leading circulation. Funding declined due to tax levy cuts, while catalog work and staff recognition strengthened library ties to Iowa libraries.
The Friday program features a dramatized edition of The Prisoner of Zenda with scenic splendor seen in the New York production. A strong cast led by T. B. Alexander and Eloise Tuiston will perform, promising an enjoyable show for all.
New Orleans hosts Mardi Gras Carnival February 18 to 24, 1003. Great Western Ry offers one fare round trip via Chicago. Tickets on sale February 17 to 22, good to return by February 28 or March 14 with 50 cent extra.
