Iowa Apple Cave Shows Farm Storage Solution
A southwestern Iowa orchardist built a 16 by 50 foot apple cave seven years ago dug into a north hill slope with dirt removed by spade and wheelbarrow. The clay walls require no plastering and the roof uses bridge planks covered by dirt and sod to shed rain. Ventilation comes from two twelve inch tiles. rats are deterred with wire traps. A 16 by 20 foot fruithouse fronts the cave with double doors facing north for easy wagon unloading.
