A three story stone building used as a lodging house collapsed in Topeka Kansas. Twenty regular roomers are accounted for with five injured. The incident is reported by Py Scripps McRae Press Association.
Malazguierd in Armenia was wrecked by a quake killing two thousand people. The dead include seven hundred Armenians and four hundred Turkish soldiers. Many houses fell in adjacent villages and cattle losses were heavy. The shock reached Constantinople but caused no damage there.
A mob at Yates Center reportedly sought to seize a Black man accused of rape after attempts to contact authorities failed. Police and bystanders intervened to prevent violence as the crowd dispersed without arrests.
A mob of over three hundred battered the jail door to free John Woods who was charged with assaulting Mrs. Julia Lind. Sheriff Patterson and deputies armed with rifles blocked the assault, calming the crowd after a midnight speech. Woods may be in Wichita. Mrs. Lind lies prostrate.
Kansas City freighters walked off the job today though no general strike was ordered. The local union president wired Chicago for an imperative strike directive while railroads rapidly filled the positions as men quit.
New York May 28. "Big Jim" Brady, famed bank robber reputed to be unable to fail against safes, was killed by a train a few hours after leaving the poor house due to illness. In his grasp was a valise holding a full set of burglar tools.
A New York Poultry and Egg Co. wagon driven by Will Smalley and a companion Jones ran away near Fourth street and Washington avenue. They were thrown from the wagon at Fourth and Massachusetts. Smalley landed on his head and shoulder but escaped injury. The wagon struck a tree at Fourth and Moniteau. mules calmed and taken in charge. One mule was cut near the dock.
John Jones, 16, arrested Wednesday in Sweeney as an accessory to the killing of Ernest E. Stephens at Pleasant Green, Mo on April 29. He was released from custody at Pilot Grove this morning while others remain in custody and officers deem the situation solvable.
Max C. Ibers of St. Louis and Miss Bessie McKee, formerly of Sedalia, wed by Judge O. E. Parsons in the Sedalia Probate Court. The surprise ceremony occurred as Miss McKee visited a friend. the couple then secured a license and married amid festive, informal rails.
Mr and Mrs David Henderson of South Kentucky street entertained friends in honor of Mr Hendersons brother visiting from Commanche Texas The evening featured games music and refreshments of ice cream and cake after which Mr Henderson planned to return to Texas next Tuesday and hopes to come back soon to Se
John C. Cordes, a Second Street merchant, learned his Nebraska brother’s home was badly wrecked by a tornado. Cordes and family sought shelter in a cellar but were uninjured. He shipped a large box of household necessities on Wednesday.
