President McKinley orders 75 000 more volunteers boosting the total to 200 000. Missouri adds about 3 000 to the quota as naval and military plans unfold, with reports that Cervera's fleet is confined near Santiago de Cuba.

A May afternoon at the Missouri Pacific Railway shops in Sedalia drew thousands for a grand flag raising. A procession with two bands, G A R, Confederate camp and M K T workers opened the event, as Miss Dora Weller pulled the cord and Old Glory rose, amid cannon, bands and cheering crowds. Capt S P Weller led ceremonies with Alice Hawley and schoolchildren, while Judge Wm S Shirk delivered the principal oration.
The Nevada Mail misstates General Wade as a Confederate veteran. the Sentinel corrects him as a brigadier general in the U.S. Army who served as a Federal cavalryman under Grant in the Civil War. The item also notes local drug store ads and a curtain ironing service at Bowman and Dorn on Ohio Street.

In Pettis circuit court the Third National Bank of Sedalia versus A B Cramer attachment case overruled motion for a new trial. Judgment for the bank totals 2490.05 with various counts and interest. Appeal granted to Kansas City court of appeals for the bank and for R J Reese et al in related action.
Judge Farnham jailed Mary Jackson for five days for disturbing the peace. Daisy Harland received the same five day sentence by Judge Truxel. Ida Johnson’s case was dismissed.
Chief of Police Prentice received a telegram from Jefferson City announcing Willie Dyer death. He was asked to inform Mary Light and to forward guidance on body disposition. Deceased was sentenced to life imprisonment.
The record recalls a Pettis county jury convicting a man years ago for the murder of Thompson Walker, a young farmer. The deceased was employed in the dairy department of the penitentiary.

The second annual meeting of the Brotherhood of Sheriffs and ex Sheriffs of Missouri will be held in Sedalia on June 31 1898. Sheriff Williams secretary sent out notices urging attendance of all brothers and inviting the police chief to join.
