Cookman Is Freed After Commutation By Governor Dockery
John W. Cookman, condemned for the 1901 murder of John McBride near Dresden, was paroled January 29 after Governor Dockery commuted his 13 year sentence. His release followed efforts by his Indiana mother and Harrison county brother with Mercer county attorneys. Cookman, now back in Sedalia, spoke of regret and hardship, noting his wife and two children died during his imprisonment and others are scattered. He described poverty at the Dresden home and said he faced insults from neighbors before the crime. He killed McBride after a dispute on May 21, 1901, fled, and was captured months later, later freed by clemency despite belief of possible death penalty. The case drew on the Sedalia legal team of Cashman, Sangree & Lamm, and Shain and Barnett defended Cookman. the latter say they did not assist in the commutation.
