Assessors gathered in Se Dalia for the annual meeting of the state association today. Delegates discussed standards and procedures, with officials noting progress and upcoming initiatives for local assessments.
The annual convention of the County Assessors association of Missouri met in the county court room with C D Brown of Sedalia elected temporary chairman and later named president. G C Marquis of Lafayette was named secretary and J E Garman of Cole, treasurer. The group plans five weeks of travel for Kaiser Wilhelm II and the imperial yacht Hohenzollern voyage and visits to Lisbon Vigo Antwerp and other European centers.
The gathering noted a good delegate turnout despite low attendance, aiming to simplify assessment work. Members approved a $1 yearly assessment for future funds and reimbursed C. D. Brown $15 for duties as legislative committee chair, who was reappointed with appointive power. Next annual meeting set for Mexico, Missouri.
Emperor William and Empress Augusta depart Berlin for a southern excursion traveling by rail to Genoa Italy. They will join the Hamburg American steamer Hamburg for a Mediterranean cruise as part of the voyage.
Lincoln marching 23. The Nebraska state senate favors a Christian Science bill already passed by the house. It requires all healers to complete a four year medical course and pass the standard physician examination. If the governor signs, Christian Science healing for fees will stop until licensing is granted.
Tulsa I T boomers finish a Missouri Indiana Illinois Iowa and Kansas tour and begin returning home by special train. Participant W N Robinson calls the trip a success for securing factories and advertising the coal and gas belt region.
New York March 2 3 Secretary Shaw Senator Allison and other finance committee members were interviewed by financiers about tariff revision. Allison said an extra session of Congress would be held in October or November. The committee will spend part of the summer rearranging title schedules to be adopted.
Denver reports George Trimble richest man in Leadville plans to gift $1,000,000 for the first child to call him grandpa. The future father and mother are W L Edwards and his wife Mrs Edwards of San Francisco after previous domestic trouble and reconciliation. Trimble, worth over $5,000,000, has long promised the sum.
The fourteen expellee members of the St. Petersburg Dramatic company presented The Chosen People in New York today. The Russian language performance followed their London engagement last month, under the direction of Charles Frohman with P. M. Oelenoff as principal.
The Boston exhibit features numerous new rose specimens displayed by florists from across the country. Among the highlights are particularly beautiful blooms from California and private western greenhouses.
In Judge Kinsey's court Roxy Copenhaver was arraigned on a charge of obtaining board by false representation, altered to petit larceny, and sentenced to five days in jail. Also before Justice Kinsey, William Thomas faced assaulting his 17 year old wife and was fined five dollars plus costs. Frank Keating and Charles Morgan appeared on disturbing the peace charges with jail sentences.
In Kansas City on March 23 Judge Wofford granted a change of venue for Mrs. Aggie Meyers charged with murdering her husband Clarence Meyers. The case is sent to Clay county and will be docketed for Judge Joshua Alexander at Liberty on June 12.
Fire gutted the residence of Dr. J. N. Ferguson at 705 West Broadway causing about 3000 dollars in damage. The blaze started in a rear flue and rapidly gained headway before discovery. Most furniture was destroyed. only a set of books belonging to Dr. W. J. Ferguson survived. Fire companies rendered aid for several hours. the home was insured for 3000 dollars with furniture and effects insured for 1700.
Harry McCune of Lamonte sold his 80 acre farm two miles south of Lamonte to B Y Wood for 4100 dollars. The transfer summarizes a private sale with Lamonte as the surrounding locality and Wood as the buyer.
Rear Admiral Barker, commander of the North Atlantic fleet, sails for the United States to Pensacola direct where target practice will begin. He is to be succeeded by Rear Admiral Robley D. Evans.
London reports an extraordinary cabinet meeting to discuss potential powers intervention and possible peace channels. China may have asked for intercession while Japanese and Russian positions show cautious signals of ending the war amid diplomatic talks and allied influence.
Tokyo dispatch reports Oyama’s headquarters stating Japanese forces have reached Changtu north of the great wall while Russian troops retreat in disorder along the railway.
In St. Petersburg on March 23 a one hundred million dollar loan at 86 percent interest was signed, with repayment over fifty years. The agreement was executed amid formal ceremony and marked as a major long term financing move.
Sheriff McGhee of Noble county left for Santa Rosa county to fetch Ben Cravens an Oklahoma outlaw leader and several times murderer arrested after revealing his identity while intoxicated. Cravens was held for Oklahoma officers as rewards totaling ten thousand dollars were posted for his capture. He faced charges including breaking from Lansing penitentiary killing Bateman and Deputy Sheriff Johnson.
William Snyder aged 59 longtime Missouri Pacific fireman died in Nevada Missouri from illness linked to a mashed toe. He served as a construction train runner during the Kansas City Joplin division project.
Little Rock March 23. The King anti trust law affecting fire insurance became effective today. Major insurers have cancelled policies for Arkansas owners and will likely stay out until the law is amended or ruled unconstitutional. Many will withdraw but may operate via local firms. Curiosity over how losses from the Hot Springs fire will be handled remains high.
Denver editors and reporters testified to a legislative bribery investigation committee about articles suggesting bribery of current lawmakers. Editors claimed they believed the stories were accurate. Reporters said insider knowledge tied a large lobby at the state house during the gubernatorial contest and that money was spent as bribes, but they could not name their sources due to pledges.
The funeral of Mrs Minnie V Long who died Wednesday morning at 1202 East Thirteenth Street was held at 2 PM at East Sedalia Baptist Church with Rev Carey V Northrop officiating. Services were under Woodmen Circle. pallbearers from Woodmen of the World included E M Snields W S Thomas Noah Shear W B Martin Henry Knopfli and Dan Brereton. Interment was in the city cemetery.
The marriage of George Brennecke and Augusta Stahlhute was solemnized at the bride’s parents’ home seven miles south of Sedalia on Wednesday at high noon. Rev. Samuel Buechner officiated for the German M. E. church. A sumptuous dinner followed. the couple may reside in Denver, Colorado.
The Aslan line steamship Victorian, the first turbine trans Atlantic liner, sailed from Liverpool on her maiden voyage to Halifax to inaugurate a fast mail service between Britain and Canada. Her sister ship Virginian will be completed by month’s end.
O D Woodward of the Woodward Burgess Amusement company will arrive in Sddalia Monday to arrange final details of the contract and review property matters. The new company will likely take over the Wood opera house property June 1.
A reported execution of William Byers ends in horror as the trap is sprung but the rope unexpectedly comes untied. Witnesses describe confusion and a stalled hanging, with emergency crews responding to the improvised mishap at the site.
Pittsburg March 23 William Byers and Zeno Dardain were hanged here today for murder. Byers’ first attempt ended when the rope broke and he was stopped by the sheriff. He was brought down and a new rope secured then remounted the scaffold and cried Now hang me. Many spectators fainted.
Ex Senator Cockrell qualified today as an interstate commerce commissioner in Washington. His son Allen V. Cockrell will continue as secretary. He will start active duties at week’s end and plans to study commission laws this summer, expecting to remain in Washington until the July recess.
The annual National Metal Trades convention opened in Chicago. A recent agreement to affiliate local city associations with the national body unifies the metal trades, making the organization the strongest employers’ group in the country. The national body is expected to endorse the agreement, ending former independent relations between the national and local associations.
A largely attended meeting of foreign exchange house representatives was held in New York to form an association to safeguard members’ interests. There will be no binding agreements, and the group welcomes U S and Canadian members.

Washington March 23 Rear Admiral Yates Stirling today Relieved of duty as commander of the Asiatic naval station a post he has held since 1903 He will be relieved by Rear Admiral William M Folger who has led the fleet cruiser squadron since March 1904 Rear Admiral Charles J Train now commands the Philippine squadron and succeeds Folger in the cruiser squadron
