President McKinley ready to intervene between Cuba and Spain and to recognize Cuban independence within two weeks. Dispatches say war looms if recognition triggers conflict, with plans involving Woodford in Madrid and a defense fund. Local notices include a coal offer from Cohen Coal Co and ongoing court filings and a infant death from pneumonia.
Miss Anna Brill of Fifteenth and Marvin streets was surprised by friends with an evening of dancing and games. Refreshments were served and vocal selections by President Reed and Honorable Cromley highlighted the event attended by many local residents and families.
A funeral is planned for tomorrow afternoon from the family residence on South Missouri Avenue following events earlier today at the same location.
Jacob Powell aged 55 died from general debility at his son in law T T Gray's residence on West Seventh Street this morning at six. The body will be shipped to Independence for interment tomorrow morning. Dr. W. O. Rogers head physician of the Woodmen of the World lodge died from rheumatic brain disease at Omaha yesterday. He was well and favorably known in Sedalia. The page also notes candidates' cards printed at the Sentinel office and mentions coach Curr, whose health is discussed.

The ticket shows W. D. Ilgenfritz leading mayoral races by 396 votes, Robert Ramsey defeating David Walker for marshal by 374, and J. S. Bosserman prevailing for police judge by 14. Other results include C. C. Kelley with 1088 votes for city attorney, Morris Harter winning school commissioner by 4, and ward results with Brown 267, Carter 119 in the first ward and Gossage 131 in the second.
National Committeeman P. J. Dixon of Chillicothe issued a call for a Missouri state convention to meet in Sedalia on May 11. The move, linked to a January Populist meeting in St Louis, is disputed by conservative Populists who question authority and regular party procedures. A cold remedy ad ends the piece.
A cake walk to crown the state champion will be held in Jefferson City to benefit the public library. Contestants include Dan Washington and other St. Louis colored walkers, with Tony Williams from Sedalia among participants. Governor Stephens expected to chair judges, with a cake and badge for the winner.

The George R Smith college faculty plans a birthday and anniversary celebration on May 4 inviting the George R Smith Post Grand Army of the Republic to attend. A detailed program will be arranged and is expected to be enjoyable. The Grand Army post will also join the R R T A at Epworth M E church services next Sunday afternoon with F S Coffin Fort Dodge Iowa a noted temperance speaker as the guest. The Camp of the Sons of Veterans will meet the Grand Army post at 2 o clock to march to the services.
