Ed Adams brought back from Springfield Missouri on the Katy train by Deputy Bud Dillard. He is arraigned before Justice Rogers on embezzlement charges and sets a hearing for next Tuesday January 29 with ex-Prosecutor Steele to defend him. The case ties to Stubblefield and West.
Washington January 24 State Chairman Thomas J. Akins of Missouri is visiting to discuss state politics with the president. A disputed resolution on endorsements for appointments fuels concerns that some GOP congressional candidates who fought hard may be ignored under the local endorsement system. The president is expected to use discretion to avoid factional strife and press Missouri Republicans to unite on all issues.
S. M. Brown of the Word and Way, Kansas City Baptist paper, denies reports that he planned to merge with the Central Baptist of St. Louis. He states the Word and Way will remain independent and continue under its present name.
J M Cannon enlarges the Big Bar Gain Basement threefold with George E Dugan handling the contract. The Grand Central will gain over 3000 feet of floor space to better serve a growing trade. The basement will feature remnants and bargains, prism glass, and bright electric lighting. W H Bartle to supervise with a large staff.
Jefferson City reports Governor urges speedy enactment of a law allowing the death penalty for kidnapping, citing Nebraska crime. Senator Dickinson from Henry County introduces a bill creating the state fire marshal office for four years. In the Senate Faris asks adding two negro doorkeepers. resolution fails 17 to 14. Warrensburg telephony franchise bill noted.
A threatening letter led Vernon County authorities to detain a man posing as a noble Baron Burr Bur after a Nevada custody stop. Local readers are asked to pass on the peculiar case, with officials seeking a swift resolution.
Sedalia poultry men posted strong results at the Kansas City show closed Jan 22. G M Hoadley won first on Bar red Plymouth Rock cockerels, W J Roley third on hens, FE E Codding second on cockerel and first on breeding pen, W E Bower first on cockerel and first and second on hens, Clyde Patterson second on cockerels. Also notes a birth and local crime dispatches from St Joseph and Joplin.
Capt Stevens horse named Joe was recovered by Neal Bowlin of Morgan county who paid 40 dollars to the thief. Bowlin read theft reports and chased toward Sedalia while Marshal Love traced the suspect to Tipton where the thief fled. The thief escaped and Joe returned empty handed. Efforts to intercept the fugitive continue.
The Rev. Melvin Putman of the First Christian church will deliver a humorous and instructive lecture at the church on Sunday evening January 27. Afterward he travels to New York for a two week revival at the largest Disciples church. In his absence Hi F Davis will fill the pastorate on February first and Dr Willets on February second.
Senator Vest of Missouri advocates free ships and blasts U S navigation laws as harming American merchant marine. He attacks trusts and says anti trust bill died in committee while Republicans courted financial supporters. He closes with a Tennyson quotation warning Republicans against trusts.
Two full blooded Snake party members were arrested at Checotah and brought to Muscogee for distributing incendiary notices. They warned Marshal Bennett that Checotah would burn if the men were not freed within 24 hours, as the town braces for possible attack while citizens arm themselves.
A large crowd gathers as the Sedalia fund for the convention hall draws nears completion. About five hundred more tickets are sold, aiming to reach roughly $250 in added support. The drawing at 7 30 pm at the courthouse will award two to three thousand prizes with Prof Gregg's orchestra performing a varied program.
