Mosquito Fleet Rapidly Hauling Salmon Down Sound
The Seattle mosquito fleet has surged with salmon shipments. Old derelict Clean McDonald joins active steamers to move vast canneries’ loads from Fairhaven to Seattle. Ships like George KE Starr and Fairhaven run daily 1500 to 6000 cases, with Transport and La Conner also in heavy usage. Dockyards overflow as freighters, including Skagit Queen and Rapid Transit, fill every possible voyage. Shipping men say no era saw such local freight volume, as the salmon task strains the lower sound cargo capacity.
