Columbia led Shamrock on a 30 mile course near Highlands New Jersey but fickle winds stalled progress. By time limit, Columbia was two miles from the finish and the race was declared off with plans to re run Saturday.
France has accepted the settlement terms proposed by the Porte regarding a claim brought by U Tugini. The French government also reserves rejection of settlement on the claim of M Lorando for 8160 advanced money to the Or Severnmans year age.
The yachts Olympic and Bonita owned by C. D. Stimson and F. B. Stimson of Seattle race near Port Townsend this afternoon under Seattle Yacht Club auspices. Other exhibitions are on the program as two Seattle tugs ferry spectators to the event.

In Buffalo on September 26 1901 the assassin Czolgosz was sentenced to electrocution on October 28 after a courtroom appearance. He declared the crime his own act and claimed no involvement by family or others. The crowd gathered for the sentencing observed his demeanor and testimony.

The steamship Walla Walla under Captain Hall departed at 10 this morning for San Francisco and returned last night from its Puget Sound circuit through Whatcom Anacortes Victoria and Vancouver. The vessel carried 1800 tons of general merchandise including sugar oil wheat and fertilizer and 125 passengers many of them gold seekers returning on the Oregon and Roanoke.
The steamship Garonne with Captain Alwen reached Port Townsend under her own steam after encountering heavy trouble 100 miles from Cape Flattery. Frank Waterhouse dispatched a tug to assist as the vessel returned to port for repairs.
