Deputies were injured and one sheriff’s aide died as troops were sent to Berks and Tamaqua to quell violence and protect strike lines amid heavy clashes and blockaded stockades.

Ray was found guilty by Justice George of petty larceny for stealing a can of lard and a half pound of meat from Frye-Druhn Company. A $25 fine was imposed, and an appeal was filed with release secured on $100 bonds. The case arose during a butchers' strike as Mr. Frye claimed other workers urged arrest.
