Runaway freight car ends in spectacular midair somersault
A trailer loaded with groceries and goods broke loose on Madison Street near Third Avenue at 10 30 this morning. The car sped down Second Avenue at about 60 miles an hour, then left the track and somersaulted, landing bottom up in the soft ground. Only the brakeman J R Amon was aboard and he leaped to safety, escaping serious injury. The accident traced to missing hooks on the new car and inadequate safety chains. Gripmen Thomas E Young and Conductor John Lester were exonerated from blame. A crew removed wreckage as spectators blamed the street railway company for unsafe equipment.
