Mrs. C Van Studdiford the former Gracie Quire and opera singer with the Bostonians will return to the stage to repair her husband’s shattered fortune. The move has unsettled St Louis society where the couple moved three years ago after she left the foot lights to wed a prominent and wealthy local felon.

Pretoria reports the Transvaal asks the British diplomatic agent to obtain an explanation from the South Africa High Commissioner over troop movements on the frontier. London coverage says an ultimatum to the Transvaal is expected this week and war fears spike as Boers move toward the frontier.

A North Seattle grocer, McKeeath, reported a July swindle after a man posing as sewer contractor helper bought $16 of goods on credit. The note named W Hinchey and H Plummer as guarantors, but Plummer was fictitious and Hinchey fled, prompting police to pursue leads and locate the impersonator.
Three Klondikers arrive in the city from Victoria B C on the steamer Victoria Alfreds. Alfred Fiske from Toston Massachusetts, Jevacs Spencer from on, and William Craig of Florida. Craig loses a foot after severe freezing near Dawson. He recalls a deep cold snap when a fall left his moccasins and socks frozen solid. He was later transported to Dawson for amputation and hospital care. Spencer is paralytic and cannot speak, suffering from scurvy’s effects.

The St Paul Tacoma Lumber Company announces plans to enlarge its plant by building a new mill near a company pond. The existing mill runs 260000 feet in 10 hours and is fully backed by orders, with nine ships in port supplying lumber worldwide. The new mill, with a 60000 feet per day capacity, should be running by April 1, and will feature first class machinery and equipment.
Miss Vaughan, a young woman, appeared at police headquarters to pay a fine for fighting after describing a dispute sparked by a letter she received. She accused Mrs. Blackman of Seventh Avenue North of wrongdoing and pledged to whip any neighbor she suspects, saying she will pursue her legal battle with attorney Hughes.
