Seattle to Have a Court of Record for Cities
Seattle leaders push a bill for a court of record for cities with 75 000 or more population to handle police court appeals and city criminal cases. The proposed court would empanel juries, act like the superior court, and direct all appeals to the state supreme court. Proponents say it would relieve the crowded criminal calendar and speed justice for prisoners. City Attorney De Bruler cites habeas corpus delays and argues such a court is a necessity as Seattle grows. The measure is expected to be among early bills in the next legislative session.
