Mukden dispatch reports Japanese retirement and fires signaling possible withdrawal as war nerves rise. Paris notes Viceroy Alexieff meets Kuropatkin in Mukden while Rome quotes Kuropatkin vowing to conquer or die and confirms Russian reinforcements of 20 000 with Japanese boosts from Neuchwang.
A dispatch indicates Oyama and Kuropatkin still confront each other with Japanese on one riverbank and Russians on the opposite side. General Sakharoff reports Japanese concentration at the center near Tiushipu. Captain Damboffski, reconnoitering, captured two Japanese guns as our left wing advanced slightly.
In Mai Tung, during a left-column advance, 40 Japanese with five officers were surrounded. only five surrendered, the others killed themselves. The village is reported destroyed by fire set by a Russian battery in the Shakhe valley. Mukden hospitals remain crowded.
Field Marshal Oyama says the enemy is gradually decreasing in strength in our right army area. Small detachments remain active, and the foe was beaten at Benjipu and retreated north. Last night assaults failed and today only occasional cannonading occurred. JAP Fire weakening at Shahke river due to projectile shortages.
Japanese left driven back by Russian brigade at Mukden. Russian losses described as heavy.
President Roosevelt directs Secretary Taft to visit Panama on November 14 to confer with Panamanian officials over the canal zone dispute. Taft travels with Minister Obaldia and William Nelson Cromwell, counsel for the new Panama Canal company. Tensions have grown, and an open rupture was narrowly avoided amid threats of dynamiting the canal.
William Virger 22 and Lucy Hinder 23 both of Seattle receive licenses alongside W W Miller and Martha Kealing both of Seattle. David O Sehoch 31 of Inglewood weds Stella Anderson 24 of Brooklyn. Robert Lewis Wooleson 24 of Seattle weds Edna Clark 21 of Omaha Neb. James Dann 45 and Florence Faumearner 29 both of Seattle.
The Star reports overwhelming reader support for its expose of the Charity Organization Society and its trust methods. Hundreds send letters praising the paper, with many recounting alleged abuses and urging continued investigations into the so called charity network.
Mrs Marie Davis files a sensational divorce action against husband Benjamin Davis claiming cruelty. She says his jealousy sparks quarrels over her greetings to male acquaintances and that he blocked travel for her family emergency in Dawson then Seattle. Also cited are two other divorce suits filed yesterday by Jessie McMullen against Alexander McMullen for cruelty and Minnie Barnard against Robert Barnard for non-support.
The new belt line along Lake Washington from Woodinville junction to Hiack River junction becomes ready for possession by the Northern Pacific Railroad within days. It will serve as a feeder linking the two NP roads and aid the nearby farming community.
A local newspaper notes bets on the governor race with Kalles offering to cover a $500 bet on Mead and Tom Drew backing a Republican victory with a $1,000 wager. The piece contrasts Democrats boasting over betting willingness and the looming outcome.

At the Florence Crittenton Home annual meeting four trustees were elected to serve the coming year. Re elected were Rabb Theodore F. Joseph and James B. Murphy. Mrs. Be Wood and Mrs. Callahan were chosen for the remaining two vacancies. The annual report showed an average cost of 42 cents daily per inmate over two years, covering all expenses, and noted prosperity and growing usefulness. A separate suit by Arthur Thompson against Seattle Electric Co. was settled out of court for 150 dollars and dismissed.
Steele heads the Charity Organization society in King County, clashing with the county poor commissioners who push immediate aid and rapid case removal to relatives. The county funds monthly support for many groups, including $10 to $20 to the society, while insisting on investigations and limiting aid to bare necessities.
The mayor says Seattle's government acts to care for the sick and destitute while admitting he knows little about the Charity Organization society. He notes no formal complaints against it and emphasizes county duties and private aid. He cites the Wayside Emergency Hospital, paid $375 monthly by the city, for urgent cases.
Dean Carlos Donaldson, a painter connected with eloping with 15 year old Lil Me Hubert, faced trial in Judge Tallman’s court. Much of the day was spent selecting a jury as Donaldson’s wife, a deaf mute, and her three children attended. He claims the girl was taken to California to place her with friends after unhappiness at home and denies improper relations. In Washington Roosevelt named Ioa Harris supervising inspector of steamships at New York port to replace Rodle after the Slocum inquiry. Harris is Annapolis trained.
St. Petersburg reports the Baltic fleet will split its voyage with part sailing via the Suez Canal and the rest going around the Cape of Good Hope. The voyage is expected to take about 90 days.
Jacksonville reports five vessels wrecked during a sweeping east coast storm from Miami to Palm Beach. The schooner James foundered near Palm Beach with its crew saved. Also noted is a city hall permit for a brick Hardware Co building costing 45000 dollars on Second Avenue South between Main and Washington. The Hague notes the Mutch Government plans a free site for Carnegie peace palace near The Hague woods.
