The jury found James H. Tillman not guilty of the murder of Baltar Gonzales after deliberating since yesterday afternoon. The defense argued self defense, noting Gonzales aimed a shot at Tillman while the incident occurred at night.
Dr. Frederick Cook and party from Brooklyn New York reached Seattle aboard the Alaska steamer Sante Arriving this morning they stopped at the Beattie hotel while their Mount McKinley expedition plans unfold.
The City of Topeka reported two recent deaths in southeastern Alaska. One involved a knife attack after a drunken quarrel between an Indian and a woman, with the killer seized by locals and held for trial by Deputy Patrick Renick. Also, Gavin a San Francisco youth drowned on a voyage to Ketchikan after a launch capsized. his body was recovered and to be sent home for burial. Gavin had served as cabin boy on the Will B. Macey near the A P A cannery at Loring.
At the last meeting the Charity Organization Society voted to grant the president power to appoint a committee that will draft a term of years in the penitentiary for wife deserters. The measure aims to curb frequent cases affecting destitute families as husbands abandon wives and children to rely on charity. President Griffithe has not yet named the committee but will do so soon.
Davenport records report Dennis Connelley, accused of killing four men, was brought from Ortesea and held for a sanity examination. He claims another murder in Sedro-Woolley involving a stranger over payment for wealth, during which he struck the victim with a club. The statements were made before the Odessa city marshal.

Memthis Tennessee October 15 three large life insurance companies filed a bill in U S court against Hoone Coulter and Maude Walker alleging conspiracy to collect three policies of 10000 on Robert Walker whose death at home followed a message summoning him back to the house. The man was a timberman and Coulter paid the policies. The companies seek payment amid suspected foul play in the death.
In Juneau a Killienoo Indian is jailed awaiting grand jury action after stabbing his wife to death at Killis noo last Thursday while drunk. Sitka marks October 1 as a historic day with cable service expansion as the Hurnside arrives and opens to the public.
Fire broke out on the Uttle tug Success owned by George W. Gilson in the Du warmieh river near Georgetown. A bucket brigade fought the blaze before the tug was cut free to avoid a nearby gasoline-loaded deck crate. The hull remained intact but upper works and machinery were destroyed. damage under $1,200.

Aevel 617 attempts to fool relatives of Ramer Smith, found drowned at the foot of Lane street Sunday, have failed. He left two daughters who remain missing. The body at the Heweey-Waeteon morgue bears OTS and a boure and two tote on Late Washington.
A protest filed with the building inspector opposes the Frye Company permit to erect a barn near the Dew wharf in the Beacon Hill addition. The petition and permit request have been sent to the board of public works. Residents fear the barn could pave the way for a slaughterhouse within two miles of the city limits.
