H. L. Brannan, a motorman for the traction company, died saving passengers. The company declares Brannan guilty in a hurried investigation, seeking to vindicate a brake and blame the man despite the tragedy and city pride.
The American steamer Chemung, a 2615 ton steel vessel 325.7 feet long built by Union Dry Dock Buffalo, is sunk. Lloyds lists it as owned by Atlantic & Pacific Coast Transportation Co. A crew of 25, mostly Americans, was aboard. cause not given.

Jewelry thieves are active in Seattle entering two apartments. They took eight sapphires and a zoid watch from Mrs. M Davenport at Vine Court after noon Monday. From Robert T Simmons at 7009 Pine Street a diamond ring valued at seventy five dollars was stolen.
British hydro planes and aircraft drove a German Zeppelin to destruction above the North Sea during a night raid on York and Durham counties. An air cruiser was also shot down, aflame, as anti airfire and naval planes joined in the attack amid cheering spectators along the coast.
German Zeppelins have fallen in six raids on England since September 3, with last night adding to the tally. British pilots and anti-aircraft fire have downed craft using rapid fire weapons and incendiary bullets. Young aviators aged 18 to 21 lead the defense, driven by a fierce rivalry in chasing the Zeppelins.
