Chicago on November 4 reports show the Southside Street Car Company operating the Wentworth line with about 1000 policemen guarding the cars. Officers were instructed to arrest anyone violent or even jeering at non union Carmen. The strike by firemen aiding the carmen had little impact as the company supplied replacements and kept the cable and wheels turning.
A 16 year old boy, son of B. F. Poeppinger, was fatally struck by a stray bullet fired from an unknown weapon while playing in a mill yard. The shot entered the right temple, the operation to remove the bullet failed, and the boy remained weak from blood loss as doctors warned of likely death.
Special to The Star from Walla Walla Nevada. Argu Menta and the perjury case against Adam Schmidt an Ankeny associate over naturalization for Russians in Walla Walla entered testimony with eight Russians claiming Schmidt coached them to claim five to seven years in the United States. Witnesses testified Schmidt urged them to leave town after arrest and offered defense funds while others aided registration at City Clerk office.
Jensen a hotel guest in Seattle claims he lost 75 cents after sleeping in a chair in a restricted district saloon. He notified police. In Justice Cann's court Nordetrom received a 0 fine after striking Gue tafeon with a beer glass. Gestafeon ate soup on the south side when Nordatrom attempted to steal then struck him.
The Brighton Presbyterian church will be dedicated tomorrow with services led by Rev. William Kirkhope and a dedicatory sermon by Rev. J. M. Wilson of Westminster Presbyterian church. The building cost $1,000 and a large choir will provide music assisted by Miss Oberte a noted local singer.
Julius Anderson known as John Hansen of the British bark Dune Law died in a terrible storm off the southern Oregon coast. He obeyed Capt Nichols’ orders and was washed from the top-gallant forecastle while others reportedly disobeyed German laws. Municipal Judge Hodge of Portland had previously ordered him seaworthy and sent him to sea. Rowena Rosa dispatches note his lone, steadfast duty to the end.
Eminent Christian Science leaders travel to New York for tomorrow's dedication of the First Church of Christ Scientist at Ninety first Street and Central Park West. The temple cost more than one million dollars funded by the efforts of Mrs Augusta Stetson, who led missionary work and oversaw the project from a small hall in Fourth Avenue to the new gray stone church.
The Star GTON reports strong indications that President intends to appoint Hal Cole register of the Spokane office despite his prior refusal and Hitchcock’s statement that no senators would back him. The President is examining the Cole case and may rethink turning down the Washington senators.
A Chinese store operator on Washington street near Fourth Avenue reports his private opium den was robbed of pipes and a coat and vest. He suspects a young man from San Francisco, whom he befriended, betrayed him, likening the betrayal to a viper in his bosom.
Arizona Mary, a slender four year old woman in a plain woolen dress and broad bonnet, drives a sixteen ox team hauling ores and supply loads across arid plains. She owns her outfit and can take work with any rival team, earning respect from miners and teamsters while instilling fear in those who resist respect.
Marty Jones, accomplice of George Van Moret, confesses to police and will plead guilty Monday in superior court. He describes selecting clothes from a captured bundle, says Van Horst persuaded him, and notes fear of arrest since the conviction. He mentions being in Seattle after the robbery and handing Van Horst tobacco at the depot.
Joseph J. Morgan was caught by Max Weisfield after attempting a burglary at 17 Jackson Street. Weisfield knocked Morgan unconscious with a revolver blow, Morgan was taken to the station where head wounds were dressed. Morgan, a former Two Fingers saloon bartender, claimed a drunken quarrel and wrecked revolvers before arrest. He refused to reveal his accomplice or current location.
Lucy Hogan sues in superior court against Joe Pastillo, pool room proprietor, for 2400 dollars alleging he enticed her two sons, 15 and 17, into his establishment and caused them to spend their wages.
Two Pennsylvania freights collided near Kokomo Indiana this morning. Brakeman Theo dore Clemmens was killed in the crash.
Jacobs, 19, employed at Fort Caney, told police he was robbed of $65 yesterday after dozing in the Interurban depot. He awoke to someone slipping into his pocket and later discovered the money missing. He believes the thief is a man who accompanied him from Fort Casey.
William Coch rane and eight White River valley farmers seek a permanent injunction to stop Northern Pacific National from building a 44m near Black River junction. Superior Judge Tailman scheduled hearings for November 23. Separately James Matteson and Hattie Walk were arrested on health ordinance violations after a trunk of garbage was left in an alley behind the Matteson home in South Seattle.
City council streets committee and Seattle Metr ic officials inspected the Queen Anne hill street and proposed new routing for the Queen Anne cars turning at Denny Way and First Avenue onto the Kinnear Park line then up First Avenue West to Roy Street. Crossing fixes at Queen Anne Avenue and Roy Street were planned with pedestrian transfer paths improved.
Mrs Arbuckle mother of Claude N Arbuckle could not attend Gladys Grey's funeral after the Cecil hotel murder attempt and subsequent death. A telegram received by the Bonney-Watson firm stated Arbuckle's body was buried in Lake View cemetery per his father's wishes. Judge Grey, the victim's father, is recovering at Providence hospital and will be discharged soon.
Mrs Alice J Pearl dies at home 1728 Sixteenth Avenue after long illness. She is stated to be 0 years old and the record notes a long illness extending over years with family details.
The obituary notes she was an active member of the Women’s Relief Corps and deeply involved with the Grand Army. Mrs Pearl leaves four children and four husbands. A message was sent to Mr Pearl in Salt Lake, and funeral plans wait for his reply.
Telegram reports Captain Dr. C. Kenyon of Ventura California death. A former Seattle resident from 1874 to 1888 he was prominent in the G A R and served as captain of Company B Thirteenth Michigan in the Civil War. A Puget Sound friend circle recalls his local ties. In Justice Cann court H Shocker was fined for cruelty to animals for leaving a horse in cold rain seven hours.
In Seattle a red headed pupil stood during an assembly when asked to admit stealing car fares. The crowd misread him as guilty while the real culprit remained unseen as teachers and administrators tried to identify the offenders amid crowded seating and unreported admissions.
Yale observers expect a spectacular Princeton football clash at Haven with Captain Dewitt and Yaie delivering key plays. Dewitt’s punting and drop kicking spark Princeton’s offense while Yaie strengthens the outside game.
The Portland baseball team won the game against the Los Angeles club on Portland grounds yesterday. The Seattle Francisco game was postponed due to rain.
In Everett on November 14 there will be a wrestling match at the Central opera house next Monday night. Hunky Hines and his opponent Herr Emil Kiank will wrestle for a purse of 6 dollars the gate receipts and honor.
Idaho dominates on Whitman’s field as backs and line overpower Whitman. Roger, Tilley and Smith score for Idaho with a notable 40 yard punt return by Tilley and a long Rogers run. Miller injures shoulder and leaves play.
The season’s biggest high school football game pits Tacoma against Seattle at Tacoma. A special excursion steamer brought enthusiastic Seattle pupils to attend the afternoon clash after a tie game in Seattle a few weeks ago.
Chris Klein convicted yesterday of grand larceny for stealing sheep from Frye Lruhn Company. He appeals on grounds juror Jacob Maides volunteered information not in testimony. Klein remains out on bail pending supreme court decision.
A. G. Dunn and others accused of using a sink box on the Bwinomish preserve deny violations of game laws. Dunn asserts no such contrivance was used and their duck blinds have stood for two years, within the scope of the law. Warrants have been served on Dunn, H. M. C. Bromley, C. C. Carner, William Stewart and John Ruppe. trials are set for Mount Vernon.
F. H. Rockwell, Yale quarterback star of 1902, has arrived in New Haven after plans to leave for business. The 21 year old, 5 foot 7 inch player weighed 148 pounds and energized the Yale team, earning an All American nod and leading the offence with sharp judgment and mobility. He prepared at Hotchkiss in Lakeville Conn.
