On day two of a major street car strike in Chicago a large police presence rode five trains bristling with armed officers. Each train carried fifteen officers and riot guns as crowds jeered non union carmen and authorities while a police squad kept mobs back from the Wentworth barn area.
A gas buildup in the Hyatt basement caused a regulator leak and a jet to ignite. Benjamin Myatt his wife and two children and Floyd White a boarder died in the fire. The blast trapped them as the house burned through the night.
Washington dispatch reports Congress maintained prohibition on liquor in the Capitol with many committees hosting informal speak easies. Access to liquor exists only via private cupboards of Republican chairmen, raising living costs for some chairmen while quelling appetite for reform to avoid temperance backlash.
On the Fraser river at Tminster the 800-ton section of the New Westminster bridge was lifted from piers 4 and 6 and floated to its new position on piers 8 and 4. The task took about an hour and was followed by memorial exercises at Bethabara with monuments marking early colony sites and notes on colonial hardships during the French and Indian War.

Armstrong faced a murder charge after shooting Patton on a Wynoedhe valley public road near Patton's house. Patton, 13, was cutting puncheons for road work when Armstrong claimed land trespass and opened fire, killing him after three earlier shots. Armstrong surrendered to authorities.
In Tacoma a large attendance at a Tacoma area session of union No. 4% United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners voted to withdraw from the Building Trades council. The move follows a breach between the council and the Contractors association and is the second withdrawal by a building trades affiliate.
Thirty pauper Japanese laborers were arrested by U S immigration officers yesterday in a major seizure. The contraband group landed on a beach at Mukilteo from a smuggling sloop manned by Takahashi and another Japanese. They received 83.00 per head for the landing and were sent to Port Townsend detention that night aboard the steamer Alice Gertrude. They await instructions from Washington.
An open meeting was held at night by Lincoln regiment and Union Veterans Union in the Pacific block. Veterans and friends gathered for a social entertainment with instrumental selections by the Hallard and First Washington Glee Clubs.
The board of education and the board of health clash over sanitation in schools. Plumbing Inspector McIntyre refuses to inspect Morgan system buildings, while new schools adopt the system despite health board opposition. The Morgan system is in use at Pacific, Mercer, Cascade, Hoss, Warren, Interbay, and Fremont sites amid ongoing controversy.
Special to The Star reports Seattle post office October receipts rose to 92,299.73 dollars from 27,575.40 last year, a gain of 4,654 dollars or 16.8 percent, marking the fourth largest increase among U S post offices.
Two sailors on the steamship Ramona were seriously hurt when the vessel struck a storm between Sydney and Auckland. Clallam on the forward deck was swept by a wave over the rail to the main deck and hurled 20 feet upward, suffering a compound fracture of two ribs. Cadet A. Jackson was also swept overboard.
Exiled Hawaiian queen Liliuokalani was aboard a voyage when the vessel encountered trouble. she sustained injuries and is en route to Washington for medical care. Aboard the ship several other passengers were injured as the incident unfolded.
Ida Wilson, a Black woman, was bound over to the court on a $500 bond after being accused of stealing $20 from a dining room in a mill restaurant. She refused to identify Mamie, claiming she had no part in the crime and that Mamie, not she, took the money.

The four masted Britted bark Crompton with Capt Hume arrived in port yesterday in tow of the tum Richard Molyoke. She discharged about 4000 tons at Vancouver and Victoria and has 1006 tons of cement for Guthrie Co of this city. A gale on June 6 claimed a death as A Hanson, a crewman on the main topsail, drowned. The Crompton, 400 feet long and 2717 tons, is on its first Puget Sound trip. Capt Hume last visited here six years ago aboard the Conway.
The Pacific Coast League report from 1.08 Angeles notes Los Angeles defeated opponents 6 to in a day shadowed by rain. San Francisco and Sacramento games were prevented by wet weather, delaying multiple ties.
Frank Saunders was killed when a gravel wagon wheel ran over him on Humboldt Street. He worked for Chas EB Lind hauling gravel for the new street railway extension into York addition. A street car spooked the horses causing the team to bolt and Saunders fell beneath the wheels.
E. H. James of 1424 Seventh Avenue was robbed of an umbrella after a confrontation with two men at Roy Street and Queen Anne Avenue. Police note his belligerence frightened the assailants away. A Rainier Heights Improvement Club meeting is set for 8 o clock tonight in Oltman Hall.
Chaos returns on First Avenue as Beattle Electric tears up half of the streetcar double track between Pine and Blanchard, halting service between North Seattle and the business district. One track remains, causing delays, missed schedules, and public frustration with no redress while the contractor proceeds.

Oakland Cal Nov 18 The winter meeting of the New California Jockey Club will open tomorrow. Indications point to a successful season as officials report multiple horse shipments from across the country and strong interest among horsemen and turf followers in the city.
