A May morning gas explosion at the Fraterville and Thistle mines in Coal Creek kills at least 150 workers. Rescue attempts find collapsed passages and dense smoke with many entombed as entries remain blocked and fires burn in the underground workings.
Seattle voters faced a decision on funding and location for a new Carnegie library. Commissioners discussed donor influence and whether building plans should be competitive or guided by Mr Carnegie. A result announcement was expected soon with funds to follow.

Thirteen people drown when a pleasure boat overturns on Lake Killarney Ireland during a morning trip. Four boatmen and nine tourists are among the victims as a sudden storm engulfs the vessel and rescue efforts arrive too late.

A small fire started in a room of a Paris house at 1 o clock this morning. Little damage resulted and no injuries were reported.
