Washington May 17 The Justice Department prepares a new anti trust action against the anthracite coal combination alleging restraint of interstate commerce. The probe cites railroads and coal carriers in a monopoly, comparing the fight to Roosevelt against Morgan and noting miners’ strikes may influence public policy.
Special to Star from Washington May 17 reports House approval of the Jones amendment allocating 60 000 for initial sea wall construction at Puget Sound Navy Yard. Chairman Cannon lauded the yard as a future Pacific coast and world class facility, urging liberal funding and noting no bids were cut in the bill.
Hazelton May 17 The hope that 900000 union bituminous miners will join the striking anthracite men grows as they would have to break yearly contracts. President Mitchell refuses to discuss a soft coal strike. No convention date set, likely in Indianapolis. The morning remains quiet and violence is discouraged.
