He calls it a sermon on the evil results of drinking and gambling. He says he had $1 000 in his son and had been drinking for several days before the crime. He believed men planned to kill him and take his money. After a town marshal interrupted his meeting he says he has no recollection of details. He appeals to the governor for clemency and blames excessive drinking for his mental state and actions. He states he had no malice toward the man killed and did not even know him. He faces death with two days remaining and hopes to warn others away from liquor abuse.
