Hans N Langseth of Barney wins the national beard contest with a 17 foot beard. He earns free transport to Sacramento for the Days of 49 celebration May 23 to 28 and a gold medal, plus $200 for display across six days. He farms near Barney and keeps the beard tucked under his coat when not on view.

President Harding told by Senator Watson that passing a sales tax bill through Congress to finance a soldier bonus is impossible. Watson, a leading Senate finance committee member, says the sales tax is not feasible while Harding insists the adjusted compensation bill must raise hundreds of millions for soldiers.
A reception honors Mother Ryther on the two year occupancy of the Stone Way brick home and her 40 years serving Seattle youngsters. Mayor Caldwell and others attend as hundreds gather at the Ryther Child Home Sunday 2 to 6 pm with toys for children and a musical program.
In New York on May 6 Mrs. Bertha White sues her husband for 25000 damages after he sued her for divorce. The suit seeks redress for the asserted injuries from the divorce action.
Dispatches from Tianjin report ten thousand mutinous Chinese troops, remnants of General Chang Tso Lin’s army, massing to loot foreign quarters as Wu Pei Fu’s forces defend. Foreign legations urge refuge while mutineers fire on villagers and trains.
Gen Wu Pei Fu entered Peking and met President Hsu Shih Chang assuring no interference with the government. He reported telegrams pledging support for reconstruction and predicted the president would stay in office through next year as Chang Tao Lin’s forces crumble. Seattle writer S. B. H. Hurst will publish a short story from The Color of Her Soul in two installments in The Star on May 12 and 13. The piece is promoted as a hometown publication to showcase the author’s popular work and especially its female protagonist.
A mob in Kirvin Texas burned three black men at dawn for the murder and assault of Eula Ausley a 17 year old girl. The victims Mose Jones John Cornish and Snap Curry were killed after being captured in a manhunt across three counties. The mob kept the blaze burning for six hours and then dispersed.
A federal grand jury returned a blanket indictment against 25 men for mail fraud connected with failures of the Guaranty Security Company, Midland Savings Bank, Pioneer State Bank, Farmers' State Bank, and Colonial Coal and Timber. All firms are in receivership with stockholder losses stated in the millions. defendants were released on bonds from $1,000 to $26,000.
Henry P. Davison of J. P. Morgan & Co died after an operation on an infiltrating brain tumor at Peacock Point Long Island. The procedure was performed on the second floor in a room converted to an operating theater by Dr Charles L. Elsberg and a team of physicians. Davison spent the prior evening with his family and remained in good spirits until the anesthesia.
San Francisco observes a chauffeurs strike with all funerals carrying a Union label on cars or hearses. Union drivers man funeral cars per yesterday's decision, avoiding a potential crisis as many services were planned today and union agreements dating two years back ended Sunday funerals.
Rescue crews rush to the Western Na liner Hawkeye State carrying 100 passengers near Cove Point in Chesapeake Bay after a wireless alert.
