In Florida on May 4 the Jacksonville fire left 15 000 homeless across burned blocks and damaged homes. Firefighters and relief workers search for the dead and shelter the displaced in tents and vacant lots as government aid plans begin. The blaze destroyed residences and businesses with seven confirmed fatalities and total losses estimated at 12 million dollars.
May 4 Boer prisoners at St Helena note a report about General Cronje's wife as mentally unbalanced and claim other Boers have died or suffered from confinement. A separate dispatch from Kitchener lists Boer losses including 290000 rounds of ammunition, 100 wagons and 2906 horses since the last report.
