The Star publishes a special suffrage edition led by Harriet Stanton Blatch while the editor is away. Staff note Blatch’s human approach and her strict asks for concise coverage, including courthouse wedding notes and an interview with Seattle’s only woman judge Miss Read Whitehead.
A political exhortation urges women to stay free from party slavery and vote as nonpartisans to aid women in the East in achieving freedom, urging independence and rejection of party buncomb.
Mrs Harr iot Stanton Blatch appeals to Western men to recognize the unequal status of enfranchised women across suffrage states. She argues the constitution grants men protections not shared by women and urges a federal woman suffrage amendment to unify rights nationwide.
Washington May 2 The Susan B Anthony amendment for woman suffrage faces partisan and parliamentary hurdles in Congress. Previous votes show Republicans split, with 174 to 204 in the House and 34 to 35 in the Senate. Suffrage advocates, led by the Congressional Union, press education to sway lawmakers who still see women as homekeepers.
In the House of Commons today Prime Minister Asquith announced an immediate general compulsory military service policy. The move marks a shift from the volunteer system and strengthens the government’s conscription plan already passed.
QE W Hornung presents The Crime Doctor as the next novel a week feature in The Star. The tale follows a physician who treats crime as a disease and aims to cure criminals through medical care rather than imprisonment. The serial starts Monday and runs through Saturday.
Fire chief H. L. Shrewsbury and assistant Clarence were fatally injured at noon today when their responding auto collided with a chemical wagon during a fire call.
The Congressional Union mass meeting at Moore Theatre heard envoys from the Suffrage Special urge aid from sisters to secure national woman suffrage. Justice Rhea May Whitehead presided. speakers included Mrs. John Rogers Jr of New York Miss Edith Goode of DC and Mrs. Harriet Stanton Blatch of New York. Rogers urged united votes and a federal amendment as the quickest dignified path to enfranchisement. Todd linked mill owners to the toll of women workers. Continues on page 6.
