Washington May 3. Rep Keating introduces a resolution asking Secretary McAdoo to report if 320 million dollars is annually withheld from the treasury by income tax frauds and evasions. Basil Manly claims 400 million should be collected. he notes publicity rights hinder fraud checks and cites wages and high earners.
Wage increases are spreading among Seattle laborers as shingle weavers, waterfront workers, and others pressure employers for higher pay. Officials estimate 1916 wages total about 13.6 million dollars with 15,761 employed in Seattle including building trades, while some sectors still await raises. The iron and steel sector grows with Pacific Coast Steel Co employing 800 men around the clock in Youngstown.
About 45,000 munitions workers in Pittsburg walk out today amid riot aftermath. The Steel Car plant at McKee’s Rocks reports strikes by several other employees and a possible 12,000-worker walkout unless the plant shuts down. Martial law is effectively in place though not formally declared.
London May 3 Premier Asquith introduced in the house of commons the government's bill providing for general compulsory military service.
U P report from Washington says the Scott-Obregon talks aim for a quick campaign finish in Mexico. Pershing will use Obregon granted rail lines to move troops against Villistas, awaiting Carranza’s approval to relocate the Colonia Dublan base eight miles north. Americans will patrol the north while Carranzistas pursue south.
Ministers of the Bay district meet to consider protesting the annual bathing girlie parade planned for Venice next Sunday under Chamber of Commerce and Venice trustees. Women's Roosevelt club meets Saturday at 3 p.m. in Arcade hall with James A. Haight speaking and Madame Grace Towers singing. men and women invited.
